And I'm hoping it's actually going to be more "kid focused". That's what the brand really needs. Concentrate on the kids, then cater to the old timers. And hopefully kids will actually be able to get their hands on some good Joe merchandise and the stuff isn't hoarded by scalpers.

Actually, that's a backwards ass philosophy that stands a pretty good chance of failing. I've always said that kids don't give a fuck a about a G. I. JOE. Instead of focusing on a target demo that isn't there. Focus on the one that's being keeping this brand alive for 25 years.

But haven't they already done that? That's why we don't have a line now. That's why the 50th line was produced in such low quantities because there is obviously not enough of us to keep the line alive. They need to make it appealing to kids just like how they made it appeal to us when we were kids.

Having said that, G.I. Joe already has all the things it needs to be appealing to kids as well as older fans. Kids don't need shows to have goofy looking character designs. And "kids" shouldn't mean the storytelling is only targeting 3-year olds. The people in charge of the brand just can't seem to figure out what makes Joe interesting to kids and older fans alike. The funny thing is, it's not some unsolvable mystery. The answers are and always have been there waiting for them to get a clue. |

The problem with so much kid-oriented media is that its dumbed down, poorly written, and devoid of real excitement or conflict. Clone Wars was probably the last kid's show that even tried to appeal to both kids and adults, and seemed to be reasonably successful at doing so.
But generally, there does seem to be a conflation of the terms "kid-appropriate" and "childish". They don't have to be the same thing, and frankly, shouldn't be. the original GI Joe cartoons were not childish, but plainly for kids. And as much as many of us seem to shun the more ridiculous elements of Joe, I don't see a stout military drama appealing to kids, so we would have to concede something (which I'm willing to do). so that probably means garish colors and silly outfits (which I loved as a youth). And Hasbro spews a lot of stuff I don't believe, but the one thing I do believe is that the aging fanbase alone isn't enough to support a line of figures on a regular basis. Action figures in general are struggling, and Star Wars and Marvel both has larger audiences than Joe does. It could be argued that they haven't really bothered in a decade to actual produce a decent line of figures, but the one thing I just about corporations is that they want to make money. And there does seem to be bit of some of us putting our heads in the sand on the viability of GI Joe as we know it. .

I think since Hasbro is reaching some very well know current actors and movie (Marketing) crew for this movie, they will also put everything on the merchandising...

Think of even the difference in these things between the Sunbow and DiC toons (with the exception of still having the characters look like people). Just about everything went down in quality and the reason was to be cheap and save a few bucks. There apparently has still been no lesson learned from this. Don't bite one of the hands that feeds you. Many of these things seem to be lost on the people making cartoons in the modern era. It worked before for a reason. They just can't seem to understand that and try to adapt those things for a modern audience. It's never going to work as just a line of toys with no other media to sustain it. It's going to need a cartoon/live action show, video games, books, movies, etc. Some of you willing to pay ridiculous prices for figures so you're specifically being catered to, isn't really bringing Joe back to the mainstream. Not that there shouldn't be options for those of you willing to do that. Last edited by lantern48; 09-19-2019 at 10:49 AM.. |

It looks to me like Hasbro is going on a different path now for merchandising GI Joe, because of the news that been around about new media in production for the Joe's other than just the movie...
