No.
I used to "love" Star Wars, but the prequals made me "like" Star Wars.

That would have worked if the toy lines sold better. Trekkies are pretty hardcore, but the new toys are still major peg warmers.

Three blockbuster, live-action movies featuring mind-blowing special effects for their time, followed by 30 years of literally insane fandom spawning untold numbers of toys, games, books, TV shows, and even a religion, then after that, add 3 more blockbuster movies, more tv shows, toys, games, books, etc.

Collecting SW would be a pain in the butt - too much stuff.

SW was it for me until 82 when joes hit.ROTJ 83ish i had both then but joe won out till 89 and i stopped collecting.
i randomly picked up a SW figure here and there but never went back. i was looking at SW figs the other day and what i guess are the newest out. what is up with proportions?? half of em had legs that are too short and the faces look like crap. i'm not talking the cartoon ones either.these are hateful. |

Also, GI Joe (despite Hasbro's efforts) it's still regarded as an US franchise. SW is not limited by country or even religion, and the thematic -despite being scifi- is not that limited. For example, i'm not from USA, and most people here probably despise or look a Gi Joe collector as a fool. But a guy with a Tie Fighter hanging on his room is always a cool guy. Even my mom and dad saw the SW movies recently (and they're well over 60ties) and liked them, but a movie of northamerican soldiers? No luck.

One thing Star Wars has managed to pick up on is who their fans really are, and cater to them. Star Wars has figures, both small and large, media including games board, table top rpg, and video, and other merchandise such as apparel, and everything else you can think of that caters to BOTH young fans, and old ones.
Star Wars makes kids toys, and toys for the adult collectors and enthusiasts. Also, they make tons of other product that caters to both in all different areas. This is something that Hasbro has shown glimpses of understanding, here and there, but have been reluctant to really cater to the collector market outside of the Sideshow figures. You can't blame them, Joe is in a very awkward transition, and they just can't seem to get it right with either the kids or the adults. Everything is a gamble with Joe right now.

About the best that can realistically happen with the Joe line is that we'll end up (in however many years) in another "pro-military rah-rah United States" phase (like we had during the Reagan years when Joe was at its' peak), and it'll "spike" in popularity for a few years. But then it'll drop back down when the pendulum inevitably swings back the other way and military stuff isn't "cool" anymore. Basically, because of its' military roots, G.I. Joe will forever be at the mercy of political and social sentiments towards the military in general.

Hopefully they're listening and paying attention now... If so, I've got a great novel series I wanna pitch to them. =)
