While I was putting together pics of http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html, something started to bug me. We all know that the drivers for the Water Moccasin and the Rattler were Copperhead and Wild Weasel, respectively-- and those two guys were unique specific figures and character types. But I don't think many of us imagine that there was just one Water Moccasin vehicle and one Rattler--whether your Joe universe gets its inspiration form the toys, or the comics or cartoons. So, if there are fleets of these vehicles, who in your mind drove the fleets?
I'm still forming my ideas--which I hope to eventually get into customs as my final answers. Will start rewatching the cartoons too for some insight. But I'd like to know what others think to get stronger ideas. Pics and photos and links are welcome here. Thanks! Also, if you know that this has been discussed in this forum before, please send the link! |

I my "childhood canon", Wild Weasel and Copperhead were the first drivers / pilots of those vehicles, and trained all future "Blue Shirts" that would pilot the follow-up vehicles. Same goes for Ace and Wild Bill. Not very accurate militarily, but I knew there weren't dozens of Copperheads, and I didn't want Cobra to just have ONE Water Moccasin!

I tend to customize the helmet of the the two drivers you just mentioned...keeping the base uniform the same. This is in keeping with the tradition of Naval and Air Force Aviators who look the same from the neck down, basically, but their helmet differs based on their flight squadron. If they are elite, I color customize the whole figure, but never duplicate the originals e.g. Wild Weasel, Copperhead, AVAC, etc. That my $.02

I just use the other versions of copperhead as nameless faceless drivers.
Only have 1 rattler so never had to solve the other problem. I'd probably use jet pack blue shirt helmets on a more flight suit type body. |

For W.Weasel, you helmet idea is a good one. In earlier an O13 set, I used Hasbro`s fang pilot helmet and the body parts matching AVAC as my air pilot. Maybe mash W.Weasel body and fang pilot head/helmet, mashing CG's suggestion with yours? This has all been helpful--Back to the lab I go... |

A Wild Weasel figure in standard Cobra blue would make a pretty cool generic pilot. As for the Water Moccasin, I never really thought about that, as it was mostly a dreadnok vehicle for me when I was a kid. I forget the user's name, but the guy who did the "200+ Cobras" custom thread did some figures from an Action Force comic that were supposed to be other Water Moccasin drivers, I believe.

I always figured that Wild Weasel's outfit was the standard Rattler pilot's uniform, and that Wild Weasel was just one "named" individual in a unit composed of other, similarly-dressed Rattler pilots. Something about the design leads me to think that it was originally intended by Ron Rudat to be a uniform rather than a one-off costume for an individual character (Larry Hama's filecard notwithstanding).
I lean the other way for Copperhead, though. His get-up looks more like an individual outfit rather than a uniform (it's the wife-beater... I just don't see something like that being authorized as a standard top for a uniform). |

There are only 2 named Cobra pilots; Wild Weasel & Vapor. All other pilots have been trained & assigned by these 2. Rattlers can be flown by either aero-vipers, AVACs or Cobra air troopers.
Cobras Navy lacks significant leadership. Copperhead is an individual operative, but not necessarily a leader. I see the Water Moccasin as his personal ride, whereas the Cobras use Morays, hydro sleds, mantis subs & other various Cobra sea vessels. |
