This is a virtual set that I threw together this week, and is not one of my actual display sets at home. But I wanted a chance to display and photo some other gap-filler troops that got booted out of the 82 and 83 sets, and resolve the issues I having in my mind with the Stinger Driver figure from before. Plus, I think there was sense that I've got a set for each year. While that's not true, the response to these sets gets a guy thinking and tinkering and photographering...
Eleven Figures included to match the Eleven Joes released in 1984. Back: Firefly (alternate); Zartan; Baroness (V2); Commander (V2); Storm Shadow Front: Copperhead (V1); Jungle Trooper; Desert Trooper; Desert Driver; Scrap-Iron; Wild-Weasel gCobra_25th_84-01_2017-0820b by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Notes: The desert trooper and jungle trooper were originally filler figures for my 22-figure 82-83 display, were originally based the 12?€? Sideshow desert and sniper troopers, and were to be proto-troopers to cover general but special environments (re: Pursuit of Cobra). Also, keeping the desert and jungle troopers as generic soldier repaints makes it easier in my mind to retcon these figures back into comics, cartoons, and playtimes. In the end, they didn?€™t feel right with the rest of the 83 set?€”likely because they didn?€™t have the appropriate opposing Joe figures were not of this year. The jungle trooper gave me a chance to finally work in the black uniform Dollar General trooper figure in a nice general sense (as basically a paint variant generic trooper), works well colorwise with Copperhead, Water Moccasin, Night Vipers, and POC Jungle Vipers. The green-blue is Citadel Kabalite Green, which is a real close match to the Water Moccasin. His forearms got changed late in the game once I finally started posing him next to Copperhead. The desert trooper is the result of my explorations with the driver/Stinger driver from my 83 set. The original grey Stinger figure has for decades bothered me. It was a figure so distinctive (in a good way) yet had a generic file card, and was never used in the comics or cartoons. I never had the original, but I couldn?€™t ignore it in my sets; at the same time I didn?€™t want to assign it a too-cool MOS or high rank that its unique color may suggest. So for the grey figure, I went back to the roots. Much like his 84 counterpart, Tan Clutch, the grey would be the alternate desert uniform of the generic Cobra Trooper/Officer (which worked better for me since I had already exhausted every shade of tan I had for my Joe O13 desert set). The Stinger driver of this set is my first driver originally from the 83 set before I switched him for a blue version, so he gets a temporary happy home with the 84 like it was always meant to be. The grey is a mixture of mostly Tamiya Deck Tan with a few drops of Tamiya German Grey. There is a red variant of the driver that I also tinkered with?€”alas that guy is in figure set limbo. The rest of the figures (except for Firefly) are on loan for this pic from my ?€œCobra 13 Most Wanted?€? set (name in progress). I really don?€™t stray from the original modern versions of these, since they were true to the originals?€”which were my favorites and my area of concentration as a kid on a budget (Cobra non-generic troopers). That group pic will eventually get re-taken and posted, once I get Mindbender (spoiler!) up to snuff. No sets specifically for 1985 or beyond are planned. By then, Hasbro was putting out a nice balance of Joe and Cobra figures, and really started going nuts with colors and specialties for Cobra--producing decent modern versions of all. And honestly, in 1987 I got out of GI Joe once I found myself staring at then-purchased Raptor next to some of these 1984 figures (regretfully missing out on the Iron Grenadiers later). Some more sets and photos are on the way, but not year specific as previously, and early year O13 figure sets (the real heart of my 25th Anniv obsession). Thanks to everyone for the amazing response to these sets! Great looking as usual! I especially like that shade of blue you used on CC. What paint did you use, by the way?

Thanks Kairos. The blue is Citadel Kantor Blue and matches very well with the blue of the 30th Anniv Cobra Trooper |

30th Style Scrap Iron:
In my 84 Cobras pic, Scrap Iron doesn’t have his weapons gear because those 25th hands had for years been giving me fits. I had resisted upgrading him to 30th style because I thought the original release was still decent and true to the original figure, and wanted to keep a figure in these sets with that original Cobra body construction. Plus I knew I’d have to sacrifice one of my updated style Fireflys (50th 3-Pack vs Retaliation 3-Pack)—and hadn’t decided which one to sacrifice, as both had pros and cons. The biggest cons of the 50th Firefly vs the Retaliation 3-Pack version for me had been the light grey being too light, and the eyebrows not looking as stern/angry as the Retaliation version. The biggest cons of the Retaliation version were that the dark grey wasn’t dark enough, and that the head lacked the camo pattern. In the end, the 50th version was more correctable and got to stay on the island. Pic below shows Scrap-Iron with his base body donor's brother: Scrap-Iron’s blue base uniform was done with Vallejo Dark Blue. It's darker that the lighting portrays in the 1st pic, but much lighter than the Citadel Kastor Blue I typically use, to change things up. This would be the first time I tried to use Vallejo as a major base coat color for a figure, which is scary because Vallejo paint jobs tend to chip easily when not following a very careful and slow painting process. Scrap-Iron’s vest is a tight fit, and torso’s lats needed to be shaved down to work. The bonus is that shoulder straps stay form-fitted on the body and the vest doesn’t bulk up the figure. Firefly’s guns are from a Marvel Universe Crossbones fig. I tell myself they are reminiscent of Firefly’s original gun because of the perforated barrel and the ammo stock--and not just because they are green. Two pics were taken with the same lighting, but with two different shades of grey for the background. I didn’t realize how much that made a difference as to how my camera phone processes light and shadows. |
