This is my first post here, but I, like the rest, think it's too early to tell. I did find it irritating that they kept calling each other by the shortened forms of their code names. I just sounded forced to me. Otherwise it looks to have potential of a good storyline. I'm most excited about the Cobra series though, it's the angle that hasn't been used yet and seems a pretty good take on the whole Joe story.
Personally I really liked it all the way through. I will be collecting this series and the other two titles as well. It was almost as good as reading the original Marvel #1 for the first time.

So far it looks like IDW has at least a well planned out general story line that will connect all three books. In this issue we see tension between Duke and Scarlett. The reason why could very well be explained in Origins. And of course, Cobras side of things will be told in the third book. I think the set up is good so far. We'll just have to wait to see if the execution stays strong.

My only complaint about the first issue is that it's far too short.

I have been very vocal for the past 8 years about how disappointed I was in the DDP run on Joe. I was unhappy with almost all of their editorial decisions. Even when they seemed to be going in the right direction, they ended up hamstringing themselves. The best items to come out of that company were, predictably, Larry Hama's contributions and to an extent, Brandon Jerwa's.
IDW has done an excellent job with their Transformers and Star Trek titles. This filled me with much hope regarding their handling of Joe. Chuck Dixon is a very formulaic writer. His stories are (imho) always good but seldom great. He's a safe bet for anything that has bullets in it. The first issue is, as some have said, far too little to judge the overall direction on thus far. However, I am happy with their three tiered approach. I am more satisfied with Dixon's writing than I was with anything I saw in the main title at DDP, and I am giddy with anticipation to see Larry Hama's storytelling applied to an ongoing Joe title again. I will reserve judgement regarding the overall direction of Joe, but I can comfortably say that I believe that Joe comics on the whole will be far and away more worth reading than they have been since the mid nineties.

so far I wasn't too happy, mainly with the looks of certain characters, ie beachead as an amnesiac black haired guy and dial tone as awoman, and the artwork coulda been a lot better. hopefully idw doesn't turn gi joe into a string of useless one shots and endless miniseries. time will tell i suppose.

Hey, I'm new.
I have high hopes. The talent is certainly there. I really like the new angle Hama established in the zero issue. The joes are declared dead, their names erased and their code names are the only means of identification. Chuck Dixon is a solid writer who absolutely SHINES when writing military-themed stories. For a taste, I highly recommend 'Team:Zero" from wildstorm, which is a 6 issue WWII story (complete with code named soldiers). He also has a current wildstorm book called 'Storming Paradise' which is a historical 'what if?" book. Basically it's premise is "what if Oppenheimer was killed during the initial A-bomb test and The Allies had to take Japan in a ground war?" All in all, we're in good hands. |

I'm not as impressed as I thought that I would be. As a reboot, I was hoping that it would be a little closer to the original start of the series where it is a small team that grows out of need. Which I think that they could quickly do, even if they started some of the other name characters just on the sidelines as support staff around them. Dialtone as a woman is a bit of a throw off and disappointment.
That aside, I think that there could be great potential for the story and the art looks great. I just hope that they kill off Beachhead quickly as he seems to have a lack of character already. |

Seemed like it had potential to me. I voted yes but honestly it's too early to tell. I know I'll be reading them all for a while mainly because I just enjoy reading about these guys. Change for change sake sucks but whatever. I'm actually not a fan of how overly-powerful and somewhat conceded Scarlett seems.
I think it will be interesting to see how G.I. Joe started before they even heard a whisper of the word Cobra. In number #1 we see that the Pit is crazy huge and they must be there for a good reason other than Cobra All in all I like the idea of multiple comics per month so I'm excited to dig into this new continuity, since by March we'll have an almost weekly dose of joe stories. Pretty soon with the inevitable movie adaptation and off-shoots plus the CPs stuff there will be plenty to read in the joe world, even it they aren't all the same universe |

I am not impressed at all. Change (which is not always good) for the sake of change is type lame to me.
The whole DIAL-TONE sex change is a bit much, he was a key character even if he didn't get much "airtime". The artwork is not that great. The perspective on a lot of those shots were off, ie. the PIT. I am an artist, cartoonist and was a desinger for a company out of Beverly Hills for a few years and I know talent when I see it. This #1 issue has left serious doubt in my mind about what is in store for us JOE fans for the near future. Oh yea...they are raping my childhood. |

I vote no. But not because of any nostalgia reasons (I never grew up on GI Joe, so no nostalgia there) or anything to do with how the comics were done in the past (I never read them).
I voted no because it's writing for the trade. I hate that in comics. Gimme the action. Start a story with the action, get right into it. Every comic should start and finish something in it, just for the fact that we can get a complete story in the book. Have ongoing plotlines sure, that's fine. Just, damnit, gimme something worthwhile in every issue. This was definitely a filler, definitely a set up. I'm damning it for following the same business practices the Big 2 do anyway, but still... I'm tired of reading through a comic and not seeing anything done whatsoever in the issue. If they had even a -tiny- mission in the comic, even for a few pages, just to have some action and resolution on -something- it would have been a lot better. |
