I use Pysche-Out as a profiler. I figured a unit like the Joes, who deal with mercenaries and other known terrorist figures would employ one to help figure out what the terrorists are up to, and how'd they think. To help assemble the best team that can deal with that particular threat.

I personally have sort of transformed Mercer into a Delta Operator. He was an undercover operative for years much like Chuckles and Rourke during the Devil's Due run. I sort of disregard the Mercenary, Renegades, other Joes hate him. He's my Delta Force guy, and is a weapons and Explosive expert. I go by the V2 Filecard mostly. He had a different alias once he came out of Cobra, (Felix Stratton). Once it was revealed that he was in fact, Richard Cecil, Delta operator, and he is a Sgt. Major, he gained all the respect and admiration he deserved as one of the Joes Direct Action Team Leaders.
I use the Joe Sgt majors as Team Leaders. Stalker; Gung-Ho, Altitude, and Mercer. |

I think Dusty needs a promotion to at least Sgt. Major. He's supposed to be the Joe's top desert operative. Makes no sense he's an E-4. He needs to be high enough that he can take charge but not so high that he'd outrank the ones he shouldn't. Needs to be high enough that guys like Grid-Iron and Hawk would listen to him when he speaks, Sgt. Major seems like it'd fit for him.

But again, it comes down to how big you think the Joe team is. Since my idea of the full-time "proper" Joe team is company-sized and led by a colonel, I dont even have a single E-9 (Duke is still an E-8), and NCOs from E-5 to E-7 capably fill informal adviser roles without overstepping the protocol boundaries set by grade. |

I can see going E-8 with most of 'em. Make Duke the E-9. There's alot of E-7s already in the Joe team.
I have Colton and then Hawk, although the Joe team (and mine isn't very big at all), really doesn't need two Generals...

I don't know about having that many E-9s on a team, even for a regiment sized unit of 2000 men and women. There's a limit to how many active E-9s can exist in the whole army... offhand, I'd say there are probably just as many active E-9s as there are generals (probably fewer even).

My Dusty is a E-7. I don't think of him as the Desert team leader so much as the Desert expert, and main Desert Field operative. He is also in charge of keeping the joes in top fighting form for desert combat. Sgt Majors need to be able to adapt to all environments, but their main duties are discipline and Morale. |

I don't know if team leader as such, but definately high enough rank that if Duke says something, Dusty has the ability/authority/rank to speak up and say something else.

I was surprised by how many Sgt Majors there are in Delta Force. But after reading the Hunt for Bin Laden, there are at least 3 or 4 for a Delta Squadron which as close as I can gather is about 22 men. The main reason just seems to be the fact that these guys are a the pinnacle of their professional careers. They are not twenty year olds. The Sgt Majors all seem to be in their 40's but have trained for so long in so many things, they are just the best there is.
The "too many senior NCOs" problem isn't an issue with, say, a standard 12 man Special Forces "A" Detachment (where the minimum rank for entry, AFAIK, is E-7) that specializes in unconventional warfare and FID (foreign internal defense), since each man is expected to be a leader and adviser for their own assigned group of local soldiers/paramilitary men (hence their use as a "force multiplication" asset). In a platoon-sized direct action unit, however, a single E-7 should be enough to handle most duties required of a unit's senior NCO. This is actually reflected in practice, as the US Armed Forces' two premier direct action units, the 75th Ranger Regiment and the SEAL Teams, don't really proportionately have significantly more E-7s, E-8s, or E-9s than standard military units. What they do have is a disproportionately low number of E-3s (there are practically no E-3s attached to SEAL Teams, from what I've read) and a disproportionately large number of E-4s and E-5s (roughly half of the Ranger Regiment's enlisted component is comprised of E-4s, while roughly half of the SEAL teams is composed of E-5s... in most other units, about 50% of the enlisted complement is composed of E-3s). |

So we agree that the SAS is very tough if not the toughest. And his filecard says he's one of the toughest SAS.
So that means Big Ben is one of the toughest Joes there is. I knew he was one of my favorites for a reason. So Big Ben joins Low Light as being one of the Real Deal. One interesting thing I learned from Col. Beckwith's book was the official story of "Blue Light" Group... you know, the one Falcon served with prior to being selected for the Joe Team.
