INTRO:
Every few weeks, I like to re-immerse myself into Captain Hydra’s epic Project Cobra custom thread. Just the other week, I got particularly interested in the INDEX he has on his initial post. Others have this similar thing, and it is a convenient way to find a customizer’s particular figure/character custom in all-in-one threads (especially when they start going double digit pages long). I “cracked the code” (by seeing what comes up when opening a reply box), added it to my own thread(s), and thought I’d share for all to use similarly. Note: that I’m not a code guy (except Excel VBA), so you won’t have previous knowledge of code with these instructions. Also: if you do know code, please don’t laugh at “my instructions”… BASIC HYPERLINK TO THREAD: Technique outlined here first is for basic thread link to other threads. This one works well for threads in this Custom General Discussion subforum, particularly for all-in-one how-two indices, but can also work if establishing an all-in-one thread after having created single threads previously. It also helps us the basic coding for the more “sophisticated” direct-to-post link techniques. You can do a simple/normal hyperlink in any post or reply by going the thread, copying the address, then pasting into the message text box. When previewing or submitting, the pasted text is automatically translated into a hyperlink, shown with the thread’s title. As an example, if I copy the web address bar text below into the post editor text box: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/452785-hhffs-cobra-shelf.html It will come out as displayed below in the final post (or post preview) and as clickable hyperlink: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...bra-shelf.html Going back into the post editor, the copied text has been automatically re-coded per the line below: [url]http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/452785-hhffs-cobra-shelf.html[/url] If you wanted to link to another page in the thread, you could go to that other page, and copy/paste. Alternately, you simply add “-2” before the “.html” for link to page 2, and similar for other pages. This bit is important for links to specific posts in thread: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/452785-hhffs-cobra-shelf-2.html Finally, code to manually change the link text is below: [url=http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/452785-hhffs-cobra-shelf-2.html]HHFF's Cobra Shelf (Glorious Page 2) [/url] which yields the text and link below: HHFF's Cobra Shelf (Glorious Page 2) LINK TO POST IN THREAD The normal link above is handy to know, and can be used to at least get someone to the right page for a figure’s post location. What’s more slick is for a link to get you directly to a figure’s numbered post, staying in thread (as oppose to single post view), with the character’s id, rather than the general thread name (which is obvious cuz you already there). To modify the message line to go to a specific post number in thread, see the code below, and notes. This example link is to my Cobra O13 thread, second take on Commander V1, thread page 12, post #113: Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2] [url=http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/449053-cobra-o13-hisshissfangfang-12.html#post5234457]Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2][/url] As shown, direct link to a specific post in thread is done by adding the forum sites post index number [note the forum site’s number, not the post—still a few decades before I get to 5M posts]. To get the post number, go to that post in the thread, and click the post number. That will take you to a single post view, and in the web address can be found the post number located after the last backslash (here: post number is 5234457). You can also get this info by right-clicking the post number, and opting to “Copy link address”. You must also make sure to get the right thread page number in the address for the link to work (Here the post above is on page 12). Also note that the page number is lost on the single post view, so get that page number from thread view previous. You then modify your desired link text in the code line, after the post number and bracket. Here the Title is “Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2]”. The last bit of text [/url] closes the code line. THUMBNAILS The last step (for now) is to a thumbnail next to the hyperlink and link text. This is done similar to adding any image to the thread, using outside photo hosting services and their respective techniques to get URL addresses. Personally, I use Flickr, which allows to select the image size you want to use in your thread—including a thumbnail size. For the thumbnail below: gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1113ag by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr The full code given by the site is below, but much of this full code can be stripped down. Need only the code between [img][/img]: [url=https://flic.kr/p/2hLSaD5][img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49078114682_c9fab394a3_t.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/2hLSaD5]gCobra_25th_82-CobraCommander_2019-1113ag[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/134079475@N08/]HissHissFangFang[/url], on Flickr The bit in the first brackets (preceding [img]), creates a hyperlink of the photo back to the hosting site—not required in the index. The next bit (up to [/img][/url]) is the link info to show your photo/snapshot. This is the only code you need. Everything after in this case is a hyperlinked title of the photo, and another hyperlink, this time to the author’s full public photostream. Add the streamlined image link code text (as a prefix if wanting to precede title text): [img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49078114682_c9fab394a3_t.jpg[/img] To the post index link text [url=http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/449053-cobra-o13-hisshissfangfang-12.html#post5234457] Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2][/url] To give us full index item entry (thumbnail, title, link) below: [img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49078114682_c9fab394a3_t.jpg[/img][url=http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/449053-cobra-o13-hisshissfangfang-12.html#post5234457] Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2][/url] For this result: Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2] Add carriage return (hit ENTER between [/img] and {url] to have the title text and link occur below thumbnail Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2] Another tweak to make BOTH the thumbnail image and the text clickable links is to move the image tag portion after the address tag. This tweak is shown below: [url=http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-joe-customs-finished-projects/449053-cobra-o13-hisshissfangfang-12.html#post5234457] [img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49078114682_c9fab394a3_t.jpg[/img]Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2][/url] and yields the results below (looks similar to above, but now image is also linked to post): Cobra Commander V1 [Take 2] FULL INDEX EXAMPLES: A full example of multi entry index with thumbnails can be found in near the end of the first post of this thread [thumbnails available as long a Flickr stays afloat]: -http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html (simple moderate index, with thumbnails) -http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ent-parts.html (no thumbnails, but deep and excellent index) -more by others to come... OTHER TIPS (last updated Apr 2020): I’m finding it easier to get these code lines together using a separate word processor, using a lot of copy and paste for repeating bits. I have been using Word, but its autoformatting and auto-extension of selected areas (not stopping at the exact character I need) is frustrating and consumes time. I suggest using Notepad, or other really basic text writer. Each index entry can be on separate lines by using carriage returns [ENTER] after each entry, else entries will show continuous. Note the use of spaces in the title, preceding or following either end of title text for the look you want. More tips here, as I discover them, or others find…

In order to avoid the need to mar the brackets in your example code, you can wrap the code lines in [noparse][/noparse] tags to make vbulletin ignore the tags and display them as plain text. This can also be done inside [code][/code] tags. The [code][/code] tags allow you to place the code in boxes with separate scrolling. That keeps the post tidy when code ends up being many lines long and it also prevents window stretching when there are long strings of characters with no spaces or line breaks.
Also, for your thumbnails, if you put the opening [url="blah blah blah"] tag in front of the image tag stuff, then do your line break (carriage return), then do your text, and then do the closing [/url] tag you can make the thumbnail AND the text a clickable link.

Thanks! Updated some of the stuff (non-parsing). Not the code box stuff. I've seen that when doing stuff for my Raspberry Pi, and very helful when doing copy/paste of actual code. But for here, when I was figuring stuff out for the first time, I found it helpful to see the whole code line--and the text wrapping helps that. Need to add the bit about the thumbnail and text being clickable. But my chicken getting cold...
Also added a link to your parts thread. Thatsa nica index!
