Hey check out this vice I got at lowes. it was about $22.00 nice little table vice. it's nice enough to leave on your glass table as mine. also matches your Mac book comes in grey!
As you can see from scale pics with ninja dude it's not very big at all. Oh and the bottom of the vice is a suction cup that stick very nice to any surface. If you could go get one best $$$ I have spent. Shop BESSEY 2-3/4" Vacuum Base Vise at Lowes.com |

Alot of good tips in here, I would like to offer mine.
The other day I needed to split a ROC Storm Shadow V3 for an upcoming project and I use the vice grips and towel method. I tried the figure in the freezer method and the hinge ring broke off. I then tried the boil water method and was able to crack it, but the front piece folded in under the presure. I could not save the torso. I was able to find some more at a local k-mart. This time I hunted for a torso with the seem looked like it was not glued, a slight gap. This time I just used the vice grip and towel method with out heat or cold, and had success. I think the best thing to do is if you need to pop the torso open, look for subject that has a gap in the seem, that should help with better results. As for the lower half of the torso, all I can say is thanks for the idea of using the same method as the upper part. I squeeze enough until I either hear a pop or see the top of the seam split apart. I then use needle nose pliers in the guts slot and apply force to open the torso. If the pliers are not working, I use a jewlers flat tip scewdriver and insert into the torso and apply leverage to pop the torso. Again, this has been a great deal of help.

Yeah, some torsos might have extra glue, making it nearly impossible to crack open. Most of the time, if a figure has a gap as you mention, i simply slide a xacto knife and cut the pegs, it's faster. I jsut dip the torso in hot water and cut along the seam. Another trick i use with the vice is positioning the arms to the front (or back, it's the same). The rings apply the pressure to the front and the back simultaneously, as if you where pulling the two halves with your fingers. The shoulder plastic ring is much more hard than the rubbery portion, so usually works faster to crack open. Of course, this would work better if we had the legs working like the marvel MU figs (no screw at all), and a screw on the back of the fig. You'll be saving money on one screw, Hasbro, think about it!

worked perfect, u have to make sure the neck and shoulders are aligned even or a little under the vise clamps. Just like in the picture posted.
if the figure is to high it just crushes the figure, but if u align it right, it works perfect every time. |

Also from home depot or any hardware store, u can get a WAGNER heat gun for 20$ if u hit the figure with it b4 u put it in the clamp, it will loosen up the glue and figure, and makes it work even better.
but ya sometimes even with a rag or sock or whatever u use, parts still might go flying. so watch out. safety goggles sound funny, but really its good for precautions. |

I got a vacuum base vise at Harbor Freight like that one for $14.99 on sale. I tried it on a comic pack SS. I didn't think it was going to work and decided to turn the handle one more time. I didn't think I would find all the parts. USE THE SOCK!

I use the clamp to open mine I have both parts wrapped in card and tape. I managed to open like 4 or 5 clean last time i was opening a few. When I say clean I mean even the some pegs were intact including ROC Helix, Baroness and others. I also messed one Jungle SS torso but I think I found the trick if I use the right level it will work fine normally I have to increase a level for female figures.

I was using the pliers/sock (hand held vice method) and it worked like a charm for a while, but on quite a few new figures the shoulders just can't take it. Esp City Strike SE and the Res Trooper body.

just bought a vice today. first figure i tried was a pit commando and wasnt having much luck so i switched over to a city strike duke. POP went the weasel! threw a couple more in just to make sure and then tried the commando again and was successful. best $20 i ever spent.
edit- just tried a desert ambush duke and it would not pop to save its life. arms are a little mangled at the shoulders now but they still work. was trying to build a footloose custom by using the bottom half of the duke torso (untucked fatigue shirt without the skirting that makes the legs unmovable) and the top part of a attack on the pit trooper (fatigue shirt with rolled up sleeves). any suggestions let me know. I use a pair of adjustable vice grips + sock. This works pretty well; the only trouble I have had was with a Helix torso (that I ruined, likely permanently), though I have split other female sculpts without a problem.
