on paint removal.....
i've been painting miniatures and scale models for many years (i've just started customizing Joes), and what i've always used to remove old paint from minis (like whenever i'd buy a butt-load of minis off ebay and repaint them for my own armies or for sale) i use a sealable plastic container (like for leftovers) and pour a bottle of brake-fluid in it. then i'd toss the minis in and just wait. it takes around a week or so, but the brake-fluid will break down the paint (acrylic breaks down the fastest) into a gooey mess that easily washes away with water (or you can just brush it away with a tooth brush) that doesn't damage the plastic at all. of course, i hadn't tried this with action figures before (my collection was always my prized possession) but i don't see how this wouldn't work the same. i'll give it a go this weekend on the Mutt Williams figure i got for fodder and let you know what happens.

Oh yeah, definitely. I wish I could do those tone depth washes, but I'm too afraid to at Joe scale without them ending up looking like they got dunked in oatmeal, or like a drag queen with caked on makeup.
As for once you match the paint, I've found that Hasbro has quite a range of skin tones, so try and mix exact colors so you can hang on to them for later use. I use old contact cases for my flesh tones, then I label them with a simple notation as to what tones they match up to. Generally, I prefer the unpainted plastic color of Hasbro flesh, but painted figures like Duke, Hawk, Flint, etc. have much darker skin tones that are peachier, and obviously won't match. Not to mention the amazing array of ethnicities to match too, like Stalker, Quick Kick, Alpine, Spirit... Each one has their own distinctive shade, so if you paint them, you may want to keep that pre-mixed flesh tone for later touch ups. These are all things I've learned from my trial and error "methods". Haha. |

But keep in mind, the pictures shown are for 6" figures... The Joes are a tad tougher to paint at their scale. You may have to pull back on some of the eye detail, or be able to turn into a pixie to do it, because even using the finest tips, I'm still not accurate enough to paint more than just iris color and pupil on top of the whites, with a dark arch above the eye.
Here's a better skin and eyes tutorial. The Bolter and Chainsword - Librarium - Painting Tutorial: Flesh : A 40k Space Marine Resource |

In any case, if you do much detail on the eyes, you'll have to make the same work on the rest of the body. I've done the same Jin did, but in ol' Steeler. Replaced the head, and painted the eyes in a realistic manner, but left the rest as it is...and it doesn't look so good. Now i'll have to add more detail in a figure that i think is done *sigh* Anyways, got derailed by that. Where's the useful tips thread?? I've found something strange about enamels. I've been doing my latest customs with enamels, without problems so far. I'm working on several ninjas (popular guys!), and while i was finishing Nunchuk, i've got the dreaded "sticky" painting. No problem with the others enamels...just the head. Seems like the black enamel is the only colour that got sticky. No problem whatsoever with the others, but black and shades of grey. The lighter the grey, the faster it dries. I had to clean the figure (wasn't drying at all after two days) completely, and paint straight with acrilics (which i hate to do)...then i realized i've used lots of black enamel in Nunchuk...and here comes the second weird finding... ...this one is useful. Instead of sculpting, i decided to use teflon tape. Y'now, that very thin white tape that doesn't have glue, and plumbers use to seal pipes. Did a few stripes, and rolled Nunchuk's lower arms. Then applied black enamel in large quantities so it dries even and keeps a clean, polished surface. To my surprise, i dried really well. Dried faster, and completely sealed the teflon tape, which now is very resilient, and looks like is made of the same plastic than the arm. It looks really good, and different from sculpting (I'm doing Bushido as well, and they're repaints, but i don't want that). Strange reaction. So, for those that make ninjas, this is a good idea if you don't want to sculpt. Teflon tape is really really cheap, has many uses, and is very easy to find. And i know... but i don't want to post a bunch o unfinished ninjas

Speaking of painting in general.. while I was surfing the P3 website (to see if their paints were any good) I came across this video they have posted - some quick tips about stuff like dry brushing, etc. It's on minatures, but I think the techniques hold the same value to 3.75" figures as well.
