I'd love to see a gay Joe join the roster, complete with all the ensuing drama. It would raise a lot of great questions within the team about personal beliefs, prejudice, and regulations. That's rife with conflict and handled properly could be a very interesting story to tell.
As for why they don't start with an all new team, the answer is simple: core characters sell. It's the same reason we keep getting Dukes, Snake Eyes, and Cobra Commanders. And it's a winning philosophy. I don't see why this new iteration of Joe nor the movie can't exist as something completely different without tainting precious thoughts of the 80's. Transformers has a new incarnation almost every year. Same themes and names, similar faces, new characters and new continuity. Even Marvel has its Ultimate imprint which takes new directions with old names and faces. It's the exact same concept at work here. |

Because people REFUSE to allow for different iterations. I'm with you, I completely see this as something different from the classic Joe line. So I'm fine with making changes here and there as long as the "core" of the character remains the same. Joe Reloaded was a bigger change then this. Hell, Rock 'n Roll became a SEaL and Duke became a Cobra agent. But because it was running concurrently with the "established" and "classic" continuity (during DDPs time) then it must have been okay. Because this is a brand new series just starting out, it has to adhere to what was done years before. If done right, making Snake-Eyes female could have been pretty cool.

no it wont. Instead of changing core characters why could this new woman not have a new code name? why would they give her the name dial tone? why would they make ripcord black? none of these have TRULY been answered, we get vague dance around responses. I dont see why they couldnt have invented a new name instread of the old one cause yes...it DOES taint the memory. im all for a new start over just dont screw up the old chgaracters and yes that change to making starbuck a woman was atrocious and i have hated it since.

I'm against any changes just for the "shock" value of making that change. But if it's a change that works for the new story being told, then I'm all for it.
Starbuck and Boomer work, and work great, for the new Battlestar Galactica. It wouldn't be the same show if Starbuck was male. Black-Ripcord, way to early to tell since the movie hasn't come out. If it was done just for the sake of putting a black character there, then I'll probably not like it. Same with Female-Dial-Tone, it's to early to tell if it's done for "shock" value, or story-value.

It could be something as simple as IDW was told they needed to have more female Joes and Hasbro telling 'em that they can't add new names to the roster, so they were forced to make an older Joe female.
BTW, there's a good chance this is pretty much what the deal was. Back in time, when Marvel was doing both the Joes and Transformers, there was a deal set in place that anything created in the comic was owned by Marvel (this was for Transformers, not sure if for Joe too). So any new characters they created Hasbro did not own. So the character of Circuit Breaker, from the original Transformers run, is not owned by Hasbro but by Marvel. So anything like that would limit the ability to create brand new Joes, since Hasbro would want the ability to liscense/create figures and merchandise based on that character and not have to go thru IDW to do it. So IDW can't just up and create new characters at the drop of a hat. So they're told (by who, no idea, could be Hasbro, could be the editorial staff at IDW, could be marketing research people) that they need more females. They're forced to change an existing name/character into female.

Dumb. Could have created a new character. All there is to it.

Really? That easy is it. Do you know the deal between IDW and Hasbro and their ability to use/remake/create characters?
If you do, I'd love to see it. If you don't, then you don't know that it's "all there is to it".

But the character ISN'T well established. I'm not sure what part of NEW UNIVERSE you're not comprehending.
They're not taking a well-established male character and making him female. They're creating a new character who has the same code name in AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT, COMPLETELY NEW, AND SEPARATE UNIVERSE from your established Dial-Tone. This has NO impact on any previous incarnation of Dial-Tone whatsoever. If the new continuity has him as a woman, OK, kinda unnecessary, but fine. The problem is we can't get Cover Girl or Ripcoard in modern versions because Hasbro doesn't want to confuse new fans. Different hair for Cover Girl and a different skin colour for Ripcoard are hardly as drastic as a different gender. If Dial Tone is a woman in the new comic, OK, many of us may just not take up the new comic, end of story. But if it affects our ability to get classic Dial Tone again, that to me is where the problem lies. |
