Newsarama recently spoke with writer Paul Allor, about his upcoming run on GI Joe. Allor picks up where Steve Kurth left off, with a new run starting in January 2014 with GI Joe #12. The story kicks off with a history of Cobra Commanders. For readers who haven’t read the IDW books, IDW’s take on Cobra Commander is that there have been several through the years. Cobra Commanders from severeal years into the past will be revealed. We haven’t really seen that many before, but that changes with GI Joe #12. Here’s what Allor has to say on that:
“These are stories I’ve wanted to tell ever since IDW killed off the last commander, and revealed that Cobra Commander is more of a title than a man. There is so much storytelling potential there, and even in these issues, I know that I’ve just barely scratched the surface.
The thing I really tried to focus on was making sure that each commander was a unique individual. If it was just half-a-dozen cookie-cutter commanders, sprinkled throughout history, I’d be doing a disservice to the readership (and telling a super-boring story to boot). Instead, I tried to make them all stand on their own. They have different backgrounds, different personalities, different motivations. And because of that, they also have different ways of wielding power. I feel like I could write an entire series about each of these guys. Hopefully, people will feel like they could read an entire series about each of them. If so, then I’ll know I did my job right.”
Allor is excited to be writing GI Joe. In addition to taking a look back at previous Cobra Commanders, a new Cobra operative named Siren will be introduced. The Baroness takes her under her wing but they are completely different people, which causes some tension between them.
Allor’s goal for his upcoming run on GI Joe is:
“Mainly, I want to use this brief run to tell a fun, compelling story that expands the world of Cobra and broadens the legacy of Cobra Commander. I am so proud of this story, and so thrilled with the amazing work from all of the artists involved. I can’t wait to see what people think.”

Looks like we're going to get a super excited writer which is cool. I'm not exactly sure, how this whole idea's gonna happen, but the interview is full of energy and the thing is that maybe now it's time to get the whole organization a bit depth. Can't wait to see issue #12.

I could read a ongoing about the history of Cobra and it's Cobra Commanders, kind of like what DC comics did with Talon.
