The creative team of Larry Hama and Agustin Padilla bring you another action packed issue of GI Joe A Real American Hero! The issue opens up with an eye-opening splash page by Padilla. His work continues to be a good fit for this series. It lends itself well to Hama’s action-filled script. It looks more dynamic than his work on OPERATION HISS. The only thing I wonder about is the random specks of ink, seen in almost every panel.
In this issue, we find the Joes trying to infiltrate the Silent Castle. What ensues in this castle makes for some explosive action. Some comics tend to just have an awesome splash page, and that’s it. This issue isn’t like that, the art work gets more dynamic as you read on. Remember, the Joes are at a disadvantage, they are fighting on Cobra’s turf. It’s not just that, Hawk is on the run on his own, facing danger at every corner too!
Snake Eyes is awesome in this issue, but this issue also proves that IDW is writing him as a invincible super ninja. He isn’t a dues ex machina, and he certainly isn’t saving the day. So those of you worried about him being in here and Hama writing this issue, have nothing to worry about. This issue, if anything, focuses on teamwork amongst the Joe team members; a gestalt of you will.
Meanwhile Destro may have something worry about, as Billy and The Baroness are quite close, and the Brainwave scanner’s influence(as well as a certain Doctor’s) is great…Also, Cobra Commander receives some “new toys” to play with, that we will probably see in the next issue, and may bring back some memories.
Overall this issue, was pretty enjoyable. It does not disappoint and is worth picking up.

A Real American Hero #158 Review - GI Joe News
Big IV says
I started reading GI Joe with 155 1/2 and have kept reading this Cobra pursuing Joe. It's good. But it is jumpy. 156-157 felt choppy as it went from person to person coming back together. 158 apparently jumps something because Hawk is one place and Rock-N-Roll is in another and they've all traveled around the world despite being fugitives(wish that had been explained). And how did Stalker and his Cobra guide get out of the desert? Bet that was a good story that has been jumped.
Several parts of 158 feel rushed. I'll be curious if I keep reading after this arc has been completed. Only time will tell before I know, and knowing is half the battle.

This issue was a major let down. 156 started strong, but each issue since have been going down.
The art has gone down hill too. It appeared rush in alot of spots and wasn't as strong.
Like Big IV said, and the linked review, this issue had a major jump in plot from 157 to 158.
Alot of stuff just got glossed over. How did Roadblock, Mainframe & Rock 'n Roll meet up with Duke, Scarlett and Snake-Eyes? How did Stalker meet up with them? Where did they get their equipment from?
It feels like we missed an issue.
Big IV says
If anyone knows anyone at IDW or is hanging out with Hama later, please ask if we'll get issue 157 1/2 next year for free comic book day to fill in the jump between 157 and 158. If Storm Shadow could get in front of Snake Eyes and Scarlett why did he wait until the castle to attack?
Troynos says
I still want to know how Storm Shadow knew they were going to the castle and why he didn't warn Cobra Commander earlier (since he apparently had to follow the Joes and then get ahead of them to show up in the castle) that the Joes would be there.

Strange issue. I felt like I had missed an issue or maybe was confused with another title. Snake Eyes in scuba gear but still wearing his visor and yet having the mouthpiece in or on his mask was wierd. what happened to the ninja who was with Storm Shadow? I am curious to see Cobra Commanders new battle armor though. I hope it's cool.
Troynos says
Glad I'm not the only one that got the vibe that we missed something.

I can't believe all the Cover A versions is sold out in NY. So I need one.

This series is so very disappointing. Proof that Larry Hama is past his prime. It had such potential, and 158 was actually good... but it went downhill faster than just about any book I've ever read.
The Delta says
have to agree with the feeling that it was rushed and that there was plenty of important info missing.i wonder if the people at i.d.w. care that they are taking an important piece of pop culture and slowly killing it.i know that alot of joe fans hated the d.d.p. run but in my opinion it was a lot better then what i.d.w. is doing.
