Damn... I was sort of afraid of this... pick up and play accessibility seems to be at a premium nowadays with newer video games. I don't mind if it is a little more Arcadey... some of the mission level designs in previous Ace Combat games were crap and not fun IMO and could use the reboot. I just don't want it to be too Arcadey.
For example, there is no way in hell the F-16 should be low tier. I mean, I routinely gunned down CFA's online in AC6 using the F-16 and Mirage 2000, but the stats were bad for the 16. Also, the Super Hornet without XMAA? What the fuck? That's its main A2A weapon in real life! My primary concern right now is that the Assault Horizon will play more like a complex Afterburner than Ace Combat. |

What I wanted was the gameplay of Ace Combat Zero(campaign structure, variable outcome due to mercenary-soldier-knight system), ability to reload weapons at bases, graphics of 6 or better, upgrade system from Ace Combat 5, and ability to buy different special weapons from Zero/6. Also enhanced lethality for regular missles and decreased lethality for some of the special A2A missles, so that online dogfights would take more skill rather than turning holding R1 and turning and turning. Something needed to be done with the flight modeling. I'm not asking for true to life physics but at least something believable.

AC6 multiplayer suffered from being unbalanced. It was better after Namco altered it and NERF'd some of the special weapons. They also penalized you if you crashed your plane on purpose to avoid getting shot down online. Also, if you were in a low tier plane and shot down a higher tier plane, you would gain more points. Those were cool additions. It got some players to man up and stick to the fight instead of crashing their plane to save their scores. AC6 online was addicting I'll admit, but could have been a lot better. The flight modeling definitely needs more attention. |

My problem with AH is, considering we're going to be flying 12 minutes into the future, does this mean they'll be axing some of the classic planes like the F-4, F-8, MiG-21, or Saab Drakken? I'd prefer having those as "low-teir" fighters as opposed to the Viper and Mirage like last time.

Namco really ought to break down the flight stats per plane, because a lot of them do not mirror performance of the planes in reality. I mean I'm not expecting a sim but at the same time, the fact that the F-22 in the games is faster than the YF-23 isn't right. The YF-23 was faster and stealthier. Both had great performance at high AOA but the 22 was slightly better. So give the 22 lower speed but higher stability. F-16 should have better sustained turning performance than the F-15 and F-14 IIRC, but the Super and Legacy Bug should have them beat. At supersonic speeds however, the Tomcat should trump all 3. Also, you mentioned the F-8 but that AFAIK has yet to make an appearance in Ace Combat. The F-4 and A-4 have though. Draaken is awesome, I want them to keep that, and I love how they included the Viggen in ACX. Low tier, ideally, should be:

Came across an interesting find while viewing the extended TGS trailer. There's footage of a F-35B with external (under-wing) weapons stores. If this carries over to other stealh aircraft, like the Raptor and Berkut, this opens up all sorts of new possibilities.

Or the devs don't know about internal storage (I don't believe that though). Look at the Hawk 2 trailer. At one point, a guy with an M-4 shoots an AA missle out of the barrel.

I did read an article referencing a recent interview with the developers. Apparently, Assault Horizon is a rebirth of the brand due to the failure of the brand. It's assumed that this is due to Ace Combat 6 being exclusive to the 360 whereas Japan is dominated by PS3(don't know if the latter is true). However, Ace Combat 6 also changed a lot of things. For one thing the missions were much longer, some closer to an hour, some, more than! When a mission like Whiskey Corridor in Ace Combat 4 comes off as long and dragging, then wait until you play AC6. AC6 was had the best graphics by far, and replays of any Ace Combat game. It also had a rival(the Nosferatu leader), who didn't come off as ridiculously a PITA to destroy lke Sulejmani in Ace Combat Joint Assault, nor as overrated as Yellow 13. I also did hear that CRA(Close Range Assault, shown in the trailer with the button prompts), is not available on all aircraft and will be integrated well. Furthermore, I heard the footage from the last trailer from Tokyo Game Show was in-game. Free flight will also be available. Heard normal controls will be available for veteran players too. I am cautiously optimistic with the game. It looks incredible, but has me worried. Wait and see mode. Crossing fingers that the in-depth upgrade system from Joint Assault makes it to Assault Horizon. |
