The more I see black ops, the more I think GI JOE. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't allot of the original joes birthed out of Vietnam and the cold war? From what I've seen from the black ops story (granted, we haven't seen all that much) it kind of reminds me of LRRP. It's most likely not related in any way to the gi Joe mythos, but the source material for both LRRP and black ops seems similar. Also... Bot BO and LRRP are two special military forces that have access to the most advances weapons and tech of that time, running secret missions to combat threats to the US.
Anyone else think GI JOE when they think at Black Ops?

There's a huge difference between Black Ops and LRRP. Black Ops operate completely independently. They're usually not bound by the same rules as standard military because EVERYTHING they do is secret level confidence. If they get caught, they are not acknowledged by the government. In fact, everything they do is under such a level of secrecy that they "technically" don't even exist.
LRRP stands for Long-Range-Recon-Patrol. These guys usually go in deep into enemy territory and simply do recon. They watch, observe, and report. But this is usually done so deep behind enemy lines that they also perform under secrecy. But most of the time, it's not to engage with the enemy, but to simply observe and report. The difference between these guys and Black Ops is that these guys are an official group of the military while Black Ops groups are not. I can see where you can get the Black Ops feel from modern day G.I. Joe because that's the direction Hasbro is taking the brand right now. It detaches Joe a bit from the military in the sense that Black Ops groups are more independent and more of a "secret spy group" than organized military unit (of which LRRP is part of).

That's where I differ. I like my Joes being a military operations team. More SpecOps less Black Ops. But Hasbro sorta has to play them down as a Black Ops team to keep them marketable.

I kind of get what he's saying in the sense of settings, though. With this game you'll get Vietnam maps, and then maps in the Urals which apparently contain a missile base. Very Cold War, very ARAH in terms of content, and "feel" I'd think. Should be a good time, atleast until all the cheaters figure out how to hack and mod their way to the top. lol
I like all the games, but I liked World at War the best. I love the older weapons and how artistic the levels were. Storming Berlin as a part of the Red Army is a trip, and that game looked amazing. The modern games get boring pretty quick for me. There's not much fantasy to it as I was actually in the military. The WWII games are like getting to act out a part in the history books. I will say Beachhead fans should LOVE this game. Crossbow with plastique tipped bolts? Very Joe.

The dark gritty feeling really added to the fantasy element of the game. I also loved MW2. Team 141 was very Joe to me. Hopefully Black Ops will be a nice marriage of modern and historical themes because it's set in the cold war. Black Ops is also boasting a more stylized look compared to the more modern themed games like MW1 & 2, so it may also satisfy the fantasy element as well.

You know, I was never much into videogames until my oldest got the 360, and a friend at work turned me onto CoD. I hear the new MoH is supposed to be amazing. I'd love to try games like MoH, and Battlefield, but I barely have time to play CoD. Heck, I still have my Atari with Combat! if that gives you any idea. :/ For me, it's just a good time and a way to blow off steam after a long night of work. I really do like the games set in the past, though. So if I get bored with Black Ops, maybe I'll try one out. Though, the past few days I've been itching to put WaW back in. As far as the game behavior goes, don't worry, I don't put people down for using hacks and mods. I just don't do it. I like the challenge of taking out people with thier mods, and aimbots and everything else. I know some people get bent out of shape, but it just makes me better. Sooner or later, I'll get everyone, no matter what they use, or how much they play. lol Quote:
