I have no problem with video game developers and publishers trying to maximise their profits from the sale of products they develop. The issue, in my mind, is how they're doing it: through the use of disincentives that penalise frugal gamers and re-sellers. It's a strategy that, to me, degrades the product quality, runs counter to the spirit of market innovation, and compounds one problem with a potential host of others.

Let's see how successful the "enter code to play on-line" disincentive is working in stifling used game sales. A quick search on eBay for "UFC undisputed 2010 unused code" reveals multiple hits:
Unused UFC Undisputed 2010 Online Code items - Get great deals on Video Games items on eBay.com! I wonder if anybody at THQ considered the possibility of this happening... a whole new secondary market built on the trade and exchange of unused online codes to be used with pre-owned games! This is what I meant about the current disincentives not actually addressing the issue of developers not receiving their fair share of used game sales. It may be encouraging people to buy more new games (it's too early to tell for now), but it's also spawning a new "black market", so to speak. Give it a few weeks and I'm pretty sure there will be a new subsection in the "Used Games" shelves at your local re-seller, where pre-owned/pre-played code-enabled games that haven't had their online-access codes used can be bought for far cheaper than new games (and it just brings us back to square one... the developers still aren't getting their fair share from the used game sale, only now the frugal consumer has to deal with degraded used product performance). This is so funny; I swear the moment they stop selling used video games it the moment I give up gaming forever. I refuse to pay more than 40 bucks on a game. I've had my PS3 for a few months now and these have been my purchases so far:
(used) Resident Evil 4 = $15 (used) Clone Wars Republic Heroes =$18 (used) Disney's Bolt =$10 (used) Grand Theft Auto 4 =$10 (used) Final Fantasy 13 =$27 I buy a used game, then when I finish it I trade it in for another used game at my local video game store. That's how I roll. LOL. If I can't do that then I am finished playing video games. Also, I probably will never hook my PS3 up to the internet so any extra fees concerning multiplayer will not effect me in the slightest. |

Report: PlayStation 4 Is Anti-Used Games; Early Specs Leaked from Side Mission Gaming News.
Looks like the PS4 won't allow you to play used games... you need a PSN account and online activation to play any game. People think the new xbox also won't allow you to play used games either. I'm out next gen looks like, I have never payed more than $40 for a game (except for PS1 games) and probably never will.
