Well, after 2 red rings of death and countless hrs of horrific tech support while my entire Madden season was destroyed mid game I finally have come to the realization that XBOX 360 is not the durable, playable, user friendly platform that the original was...in fact, mine..was a piece of crap, not once..but twice!!
So with all that..I am on day 2 of PS3 (Merry Christmas!) snagged a Madden 10 and a Call Of Duty 2. I have been ADDICTED TO Call Of Duty since I opened it....I know Im a day late here, but yeah..it is definately worth the praise everyone gave it. So here are my questions for you PS3 vets. 1. Is there ever any problems with playing a Blu Ray? Especially after a 3 hr gamming session where it might be hot?? Not that mine gets hot, I just want to know what "overuse" is to the PS3 2. Ok, so theres no play back with ps1 and 2 discs right? Is everything downloadable then? Remember that old Star Wars game that was like Street Fighter? Masters Of Terra Kasai? Or something like that...just wondering if I can DL it. 3. Any hardware/software issues I should be concerned with? Thanks in advance and if anyone wants to play Madden or C.O.D. with a noob.....EagleBlitz77 |

If I want to play PS1 / PS2 games I go use that one. Since I've gotten the PS3 (it's been about a year) I've had no interest to buy PS1 / PS2 games I only use the old system to play old games I had before and really like. I think my PS3 is in fact backwards compatible but I don't use it for that. 3) See answer #1 |

The fan will get loud sometimes after extended play sessions (I have it inside a cabinet) but otherwise no issues with the PS3 itself. 2. I have a 60GB model that CAN play old games and I pretty much never do. The few old games I do play are downloaded from the PSN. 3. None that I am aware of. Oh! its incompatible with water. 3.1 I hope you picked up some HDMI cables ;) icblue1981 - welcome aboard |

Does anyone's PS3 (Slim in particular) make a cracking noise after shut down? Mine does which I belive is the plastic cooling off but it does this every now and then even 4 to 6 hours after shut down and it's got me nervous.

All playstation 3 models are compatible with Playstation 1 games via software emulation. The playstation 2 hardware available to the original 60 gig models has since been removed. There was a temporary model that had playstation 2 emulation, but it has been removed.
If you bought the slim it can play ps1 games, but not ps2 games. The blu-ray player in the playstation 3 is the best player on the market. The firmware downloads and extra processing power in the ps3 make it the player to own. When 3d technology comes down the pipe started next year the ps3 will be able to handle this with a simple firmware update. There are no cooling issues with the playstation 3 as long as it is able to breathe freely and isn't couped up in a cabinet or anything. Any game console will die when heat cannot escape, so be wary of airflow. I'm an owner of the original 60 gig that i have since replaced the hard drive in myself to 160 gig hard drive. I love it and would never look back. Mine runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week doing gaming, movies, and folding@home. This is not an exaggeration. It is probably the most reliable console i have ever owned.

Up until about a week ago, I would have given the same glowing report. Then, the blu ray laser in my 60gb PS3 went. I did a bit of online research, and it turns out the first generation models are starting to fail at a high rate. Not X-box 360 rates, but higher rates nonetheless. I called sony, and they offered to send me a 120gb slim model (with no PS2 backwards compatibility) for the same it would cost to fix my 60 gb machine. My machine was out of warranty, so I thought that was decent on their part.
The bottom line is that PS3's aren't perfect, but they're still a safer bet than the competition at this point. I think you can't buy a better blu ray player, either. btw, look for uberchad for some madden10 competition. |

Same as above. I bought the MGS4 80GB bundle with most backwards compatibility, and SD Pro, SD and CF slots along with 4 USB ports. Slim is missing those important last bits.
The only concern I have is storage space, as my 80GB is a little over half full, and I'm certain I'll run out at some point. Upgrading is pretty simple however, so no worries. BTW, on CODMW2....do not prestige when you hit level 70...it's not worth it for a little new icon next to your name since you lose all unlocks other than titles and badges and have to start over.
