Now I have never hardmodded the original Xbox, but years ago I did softmod my original Xbox, and was recently shown there's a whole new set of mods to this and it had me wondering how many here have modded their consoles, be it for emulation, or adding a larger HDD.
And of course I'm sure some have modded their 360s, playstations, so if you have, modded your systems lets talk about your upgrades, and experiences.

I haven't, but I need to replace the DVD drive in my original Xbox, as it has all sorts of disc read errors. How easy is it to do that nowadays?

I have an Xbox One that I haven't played in months, and a Switch which I am currently playing on. I haven't modded either of them. I did, however, modify a SNES Classic and added a bunch of RPGs and some of my favorite games to it, such as Final Fantasy II, Chrono Trigger, Lufia I and II, Turtles in Time, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Sim City, and others in addition to the original 21 games it had. Much cooler now.

I had a soft modded Wii and PS2, mostly so I could play pirated content on them, but I've always been more of a collector, so I generally elect to keep my consoles in factory condition.
The Corps still sucks. Quote:

I've never softmodded anything since I don't really go for piracy (I used to work in the games industry, and that's still a soft spot for me) and because I traditionally had all the consoles I would need to play whatever I want. But managing all those consoles can be a hassle, both from a space perspective and a condition perspective--I dragged out my SNES a few nights ago to play Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and it took a bit of contact cleaning before it would boot up--and I'm definitely starting to warm up to gray-area alternate methods just for the sake of convenience, though I haven't really done more than dip my toes in the water.
Truth be told action figure collecting has largely supplanted video gaming as my "main" hobby the last few years, and I haven't really kept up with new releases (games or hardware) the last generation or so--though I don't know if that's a real improvement now that third-party figures are almost costing video game money. (I like the Corps, personally.)

(No shame in liking the Corps, either- I just like ribbing Walt once in awhile.) Also, I happen to think Mystic Quest is very underrated. It may be simple, but like many, that game was my introduction to the genre and will always hold a special place in my heart. Excellent soundtrack, as well.

The Corps still sucks. I literally just sold all of those SNES games (alongside around 120 or so more) a few months back. It was hard to do, but I fucking raked it in, and emulation is easy. Chrono Trigger in particular is one expensive game. I've been collecting Switch games like crazy, and they really have found a great niche with the tons of RPGs and Metroidvanias of all kinds. I'm up to 51 games now, and my backlog is massive, so yeah, collecting now. |

I'm not promoting the piracy, there's a lot of ways to import what you physically own as backup, as well as homebrew content, back when I first softmodded my xbox ( showing my age here) XBMC was only for xbox, now you can use its modern equivalent on most devices *kodi
About the disk drive replacement, there's a lot of YouTube videos on that, I personally haven't changed out an xbox dvd drive, but I am about to upgrade using the rocky softmod kit which supports hdd over 2tb. That might seem like overkill, but for a system that's 20 plus years old my xbox feels like a part of the family. I know the ram can be upgraded at least from what I've seen online, and I did clean and apply new thermal paste to the GPU and CPU ( if you have one even if you're not modding it, I highly recommend putting new thermal paste! It'll prolong the life of your xbox. And another neat feature after softmodding using the rocky softmod, is registering for insignia, which is an xbox live replacement for the Original xbox which is a nice feature because Microsoft shut down xbox live 1.0 back in 2010.

I realized I didn't put up any information about Insignia, here's some information on it.

I softmodded mine 15+ years ago to rip GTA San Andreas to the hardrive because it kept having disc errors. Used the XBOX media center function for a couple years too.
If you have an original xbox before version 1.6 look into removing and/or fixing the clock capacitor becasue all versions before 1.6 have a bad cap that is leaking and damaging the motherboard. |
