Played through six hours of this thanks to EA access.
If anyone was worried that Bioware might have lost its' touch after Dragon Age 2's repetitive environments and lackluster combat and Mass Effect 3's original ending, have no fear...this game is very much a return to form. I'll have to play the story more to know for sure but it might be the best Dragon Age yet. After the six hours was up I couldn't wait to play more. It's also a gorgeous game. No longer is Thedas a uniform muddy shade of brown! The worst part is that I have to work late tomorrow, so won't be able to get much time in after I get home. Bah! PS: For all their faults, I still liked Dragon Age 2 and LOVED Mass Effect 3, especially after the DLC and "amended" endings. |

I like the keep, much easier than just playing two games again just to change one thing.

If you're an obsessive side-quester like me, this is easily a 120+ hour game, so...you're not going to see a lot 6 hours in in terms of how the world was affected by your decisions. Near as I can tell, the only "early game" thing I saw that really made a difference is whether or not the Warden romanced Leliana in the first game (in which case her dialogue changes when talking about them).
There are some other things, some quite significant, but avoiding spoilers for now. |

I rented this game and played it for two days. It has it's pluses and its minuses.
My biggest gripe outside of my TV not apparently capable of letting me read the text in the game, is the weird difficulty spikes. I'm playing on Casual as I have done in the previous games, and this game wallops me. Like a few of the rifts in that forest you can go to early in the game, the monsters practically insta-kill me even though I've been leveled up to around 7 and everything else outside of those huge sledgehammer or axe wielding guys in armor you encounter, I can mop the floor with. Also, there's something in that forest I was horrified to encounter early on while exploring. Hint: it's name is in the game's title Killed me so crazy fast. |

Also, there's something in that forest I was horrified to encounter early on while exploring. Hint: it's name is in the game's title Killed me so crazy fast. Basically, some stuff is there for you to come back to later (like the aforementioned pants-browning encounter that did the same thing to me, though apparently if you manage to race through the area said encounter shifts to a different area where you can actually fight it (not at low level, obviously) and you're then free to explore the zone). The "strafing runs" are basically just there to scare the players/remind them said creatures are not to be trifled with. Basically, when you get the notification that "new operations are available" it's probably not a bad idea to actually do them and unlock new areas and explore them a bit before coming back to the tougher stuff. I spent the better part of two days grinding out the Hinterlands and there are still a couple rifts (plus the encounter you mention) that I'm not ready for, but again, it's an intentional design decision (in this game, enemy levels generally don't scale with you like the last few games), and not so much a flaw. In fact, if you grind out the whole of the Hinterlands (or almost all of it) then you'll find the "next areas" almost trivially easy. A lot of stuff (especially Dragon Hunting) is basically designed to give people stuff they can do after beating the game, because if you do EVERYTHING before beating the story (which I suspect like you is how I tend to play), you'll find the story stuff ridiculously easy. No spoilers within...
Yeah, it is supposed to be like that...I think the rift with the rage or pride demon on the river by the farm is ridiculously hard under level 8 so far..still can't beat that one..... The rest have been pretty standard, but that one is obviously meant to be a beast. You may also need new party members, or add some mage spells the demon isn't resistant to.... he is resistant to cold and I've been buffing cold spells... oops... I also wasn't dialoguing at Haven, so I was missing some dialogue options that have cleared up some of my concerns about the Keep transfer. Another one that can be more difficult is the mercenary/bandit with the Maul....... That's all I can say without spoiling.....

12 hours in and I'm not close to done with the basic hinterland area yet, Jmaq.
This game has a ridiculous number of side quests so far...
