you dont even see arcades now lol. back in the day, everywhere you walked into had a arcade game. we even had arcade joints, and being from the shore, sea side and jenks, lbi even keansburg all the way down to cape may had arcades, the shore spots probably do still, i wouldn't know, i got know time for board walks, but you don't see them joints at a sub shop or italian deli or pizzaria. i wonder if the bowling alley still has em? i wouldn't know, i ain't got no time for bowling.

My whole arcade/video game phase started with playing Vanguard in Zayres. I remember a bunch of kids standing around that machine, watching each other play while our parents shopped. I remember in particular Christmas 1985. There were a couple of my cousins and like 30 kids all standing around that machine. We played it for what was probably close to an hour while our parents Christmas shopped. That year I got Atari 5200 with Vanguard, Joust, Defender, Frogger and Mario Bros. GREAT CHRISTMAS!
Anyway, I remember going to the arcades around Augusta (the capital of Maine) for the next few years. There were 3 in particular that I remember and spent MUCH of my time at. Anyway, some of my favorite games were: Vanguard, Joust, Double Dragon, Asteroids, Pole Position, Q-Bert and what actually killed arcades in my opinion, Gauntlet. I know SO MANY KIDS who BEGGED their parents for a Nintendo because all the arcade games were now on NES that it would actually SAVE them money in the long run. Christmas 1988 I got a NES along with Double Dragon, Gauntlet, Ninja Gaiden, Zelda and Dragon Warrior. I dont remember missing the arcade after that until way later in high school when there were no more arcades around Augusta. I missed hanging out with other kids, hanging around watching kids beat games, meeting girls and making out with them behind the skeeball machine, etc. Arcades were awesome and I have a total pipe dream to open one up some day. Unfortunately theyll never be like they were in the '80's. Last edited by bigvig; 01-10-2012 at 07:22 PM.. |
