I don't get the whole "we have the best version of Snake Eyes so stop making any more" view. Shouldn't we be happy that they found a way to improve the figure? I think it's a great effort on a company to continue to push the envelope versus just accepting the status quo. Imagine if Michael Jordan won his first championship and then said...ok we won and are on top now, no need to keep trying. He wouldn't have won 6 championships.
Bottom line is that we don't know what the best version of a character is unless we keep trying to improve on them. |

Anyone else start their weekends off right with Baron's brutally honest, colorful commentary? I might not agree with everything stated(with this thread I do agree with most of what he said), but damn if I'm not entertained. This guy could meet any marketing team and change the direction of a company in 1 day. You have won the thread Baron Samedi.

7. Sell the figures for the movies. You know, by now, that the other shit does not sell. It just eats up space. We do not need little cars with Iron Man logos, we do not need wind-up toys, we do not need silly masks in June. Sell the damned toys you know are going to make money. It's obvious anything "Transformers" that isn't, you know, a goddamned Transformer... is not going to sell. You have known this for years.

I only really have a few gripes about modern action figure lines.
1. Make articulation functional, especially in the neck. So many figures can't look up or down, despite them having ball joints in their head/neck. The POC wave 3 Snake-Eyes is a perfect example of this. I would have gladly sacrificed having a swappable head for one that could actually look up. 2. Make hands that can hold the weapons the figure came with. Joes are generally great with this. However, POC Lowlight has a bit of an issue, although it's due to his jacket restricting his ability to cross his chest enough. MU World War Hulk can't really hold his weapons (were the weapons planned for an Ares figure, perhaps?). MU has had a few characters come with weapons, but the figure only has one hand that can hold them. If a character has multiple weapons, make sure he/she can hold them in either/both hands. 3. POC should have functional holsters for pistols. The 25th Ann. line had great pistol holsters on just about every figure. POC is severely lacking in these, which is a shame since functional holsters was one of the great improvements of the 25th line. 4. Hasbro's big-ticket items should work with the main toyline or at least be cool. I hate things like the giant ROC Duke or R/C Iron Man 2. If they want to make a giant-sized figure, make it really poseable. I'd love a movie Iron Man that's as big and poseable as the current Masterwork Galactus. In fact, I'd like a whole Avengers team in that style. 5. Playsets. Make them functional and cool. Hasbro made the Lars Homestead and crappy PIT and took it that people don't want playsets. Girls' lines have tons of playsets. Guys get nothing. And when we do, it's something incredibly lame like the Lars Homestead. The PIT would have been better as a stationary playset where you could actually display your figures. Having it transform into a giant camper actually works against it. I don't want to leave it open, due to its hideous layout. And I don't want to leave it closed, due to its hideous design. Other than those complaints, I'm cool with how things are being done. Hasbro, in particular, seems to be striving to improve all of its lines. Star Wars, GI Joe, and the Marvel lines all seem to be improving. Distribution is often blamed on the toy manufacturer by fans. However, I think it has more to do with retailers. If retailers order enough product, Hasbro will certainly ship it to them. Sometimes, they may have to juggle a few things when big summer lines all pile on each other (even Hasbro has a limit to resources). However, Hasbro wants to sell product. If companies order their stuff, you can be sure they'll ship it. |
