On the business side I say a change in fixed costs, variable costs, and perceived value. Tooling represents the fixed costs. A 1/18 tool is pretty much the same price as a 1/12 tool, and these tools eat up the bulk of the development budget. Then you have the variable costs of plastic consumed, labor used, paint apps, etc... 1/18 does win here as less plastic is used, but things like paint apps and assembly are pretty much the exact same as 1/12. Then comes perceived value. How much value is in a 4" figure, and how much is the genpop willing to pay? $13 seems to be pushing that upper limit while $10 is much more reasonable. That's GI Joe and SW vs Fortnite and Halo. On the other hand 1/12 starts at $20. That's a $7-10 jump in sell price, and from a production standpoint the only difference is the amount of plastic used. As AxonRey pointed out, that's a way better profit margin.
This is one of the parts I find fascinating. So scale sells scale. 1/18 was a beast because GI Joe, SW, Marvel, DC, etc... were all in the same scale plus vehicles and playsets. All these universes could now interact and increased play and world building. Now we're seeing this play out in 1/12. I argue that old fans have aged out and new fans are aging out of imaginative play patterns at younger ages due to increased screen usage. Lego has disturbing stats like only 50% of build sets are constructed. 85% of build sets are never reassembled if they come apart or break. Most consumers are really only interested in mini-fig collecting. I think this also applies to action figures where both old and young customers are more interested in collect and display patterns than imaginative story telling play patterns. 1/12 is much better for display and strikes a really good balance of size and price in comparison to 1/18 and 1/6. I think this move is fan driven, or began as fan driven and is now supported by the big companies jumping onboard. Collector oriented lines seem to support this theory. Collector based lines and Kickstarters seem to favor 1/12 by a wide margin. "Animal Warriors of the Kingdom" has had three toy kickstarters, two for 1/18 and one for 1/12. The first 1/18 KS funded for $75k (116%), the second for $69k (138%), and the most recent 1/12 KS funded for $360k (364%). The 1/12 KS was far more successful than the 1/18 scale fundraisers by every metric. The FourHorsemen's Mythic Legions line was originally planned to be 1/18 scale, but production costs and fan interest favored 1/12. In the end it launched as a 1/12 line and has been wildly successful. Mythic Legions has far higher sales and returns than the comparative 1/18 fantasy line from Bossfight Studios. More and more collector lines are launching in the 1/12 scale because it has the best opportunity for success. Coffin Comics, Valaverse, Xesray Studio, Super7, etc... I think at retail the future of 1/18 will be figures like what Jazzwares and SpinMaster put out, while the collector market will have Marauders, JoyToy, Bossfight, etc... Pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. |

Your tooling and fixed cost explanation makes perfect sense. I still don’t buy fans tastes changed or 6 inch looks better. It’s whatever Hasbro pushes. If the tooling and costs favored 4 inch that’s what we would all be collecting. There’s not a real way to prove that theory though. It’s the world we are in and however we got there Hasbro sees no real profit in mass retail 4 inch lines.
I’d also be interested to dive into those Mythic Legions numbers. They’re sales should be higher than BFS, as their figures are 10x the price.

Apologies if this was already discussed here (sorry been too busy at work to keep tabs), I know they said an Emperor was coming but didn't expect this.
Thought of you right away 'Gala, https://hasbropulse.com/collections/...-s-throne-room I do hope Palpy comes carded in that set, but since I got him as a mail away as a kid it's no that big of a deal for me.

Now I'll have that voice in my head every time I see the figure. LoL.
I'll use my membership to grab my allotment and see who I can help out here.
