I've heard that they trash the section looking for the Treasure Hunts and then they don't clean up their messes. They even go as far as taking every car off of the pegs and toss them into a shopping cart only to wheel it away to another section so that they could take their time looking through them. When they are done they just leave the cart filled with all of the cars that they didn't buy, which is about 99% of them.
Now that habbit is messed up. I envy them in that way... the stuff they want cost only a buck.

There's 1 thing that might get me interested; In the words "treasure hunt," are the Ss replaced with $? If so, I'll take it. I only collect the hunts, and the odd cars I like (like the new batmobile they just put out).
And not all of us trash the section, or don't pick up after ourselves. I've heard the same about all other toy collectors, and sometimes it's just a lazy parent who let their kids rumage them (same with some of the other toys too).

Nope, I'm not... Good thing too because every time I pass through the toy car aisle, I see the blackened Mystery packages all torn into so as to see what car is in the package. Without fail.
I'm pretty sure it's one of two guys I see all the time. They wait in the vestibule of Target or Walmart waiting for the doors to open. When they do, they race back to the Hot Wheels section and tear through it looking for new cars. Then the hop int heir rides and head to the next store on the route. Any Illinois Tankers in the Arlington Heights to Palatine area probably know who I'm talking about. One is an older guy with a bad mustache who wears a beat up cubs hat and shorts all year round it seems.

In my opinion Hot Wheels are probably the most scalped toy there is.
I know everyone here complains about people scalping Joes, but I've never seen any of the scalpers in my area ever come close to even touching a Joe. They usually go for Hot Wheels, Lego, and Power Rangers...that's right I said Power Rangers, go figure. (No pun intended.) The funny thing when it comes to Hot Wheels is that employees of stores like Target, TRU and Walmart hate these collectors or scalpers the most. No offense to Hot Wheels collectors here, but I think that their antics give the rest of the collectors a bad name, especially when it comes to the way store employees feel about collectors in general. Now I know not all Hot Wheels collectors are like this, but most of the ones I've come into contact with are very ecentric. I have also noticed tons of Star Wars collectors also trash the aisle by pulling figs off the pegs and leaving them on the shelf.

I'll take figures off shelves to look behind them if I don't want to flip through each.. but I put them back when I'm done... and generally I make sure each peg has the same amount instead of 2 pegs with all of them barely fitting.

When I was a manager at KB I used to have to kick Hot wheels collectors out all the time for sneaking into the back room looking for treasure hunts. They truly are the craziest of all collectors.

I found a gangster grin TH one day at pure random. I buy hot wheels, but I usually go for the common stuff, I'll buy a ferrari or two, or something exotic.
The only time I went nuts was the recent Ecto-1 that was released. Being a ghostbusters fan, I had to get one! I just can't believe some of the stories I hear about HW collectors. And I too have seen older guys check TRU and target in the morning looking for cars. |
