Sadly, I don't have pictures to accompany this mini-review, but I simply have to say that the new Snowspeeder that Hasbro has just put out in its' "Starfighter" assortment is possibly the most awesome vehicle they'll put out this year, and that includes the big AT-AT.
For starters: It's smaller than the original. Blasphemy you say? Not so! The original Snowspeeder was one of the rare examples of a vehicle that was actually oversized in its' original form (due to electronics). This new version is pretty much perfectly to scale with the figures. Next: Electronics aside, it actually retains pretty much all the features of the original, minus the "spring loaded" landing gear (still has retractable landing gear, though). Plus it adds: Moving stabilizers and a removable laser cannon actuator/panel for "repair access." Finally, and here's where Hasbro really went the extra mile in my book: The vehicle actually comes with two sets of laser cannons and two different "harpoon launchers." One set is "movie accurate" and properly in scale with no action features, the other set is slightly oversized (or greatly oversized in the case of the harpoon launcher) and have "launchers" built into them. Now, the launching laser cannons are pretty darn close to "movie accurate" as it is...close enough that it's really nice of Hasbro to include the other set. The launching harpoon does have the string attached, though it's not enough to wrap around the legs of the new AT-AT I'm sure. There's also an extra little compartment to store the string when the launcher is attached. Seriously...this thing is awesome...pretty much an improvement on the original in every way. I also picked up the Cloud Car, which is also pretty awesome, but not quite as cool as the Snowspeeder. It is, however a great lesson in how to pack "action features" into a "Classic" vehicle without them ruining the look or accuracy of the vehicle. |

I have the 1996 and the 2001 versions of the Snowspeeder. The 1996 one is electronic and the 2001 is not.I think the question is sense I have the early ones should I pass on this.

I would say buy the heck out of the new one, but it's really up to you. It's more accurate and just as play-worthy, with great detail. But if you're happy with what you have, it's not absolutely necessary.

It is, however a great lesson in how to pack "action features" into a "Classic" vehicle without them ruining the look or accuracy of the vehicle. The Cloud Car and the Snow Speeder. I had the original snowspeeder as a kid and recently sold it, knowing that this was going to be released. My original showed quite a bit of wear and tear and cracks in the wings. I still have the Target re-release for a few years ago. You are completely correct. The newer Snowspeeder is an incredibly updated design. The interior is actually more detailed and roomier than the original and even has a few easter eggs that you would never realize unless you opened it up. For instance, they even made a section for harpoon gun's rope to be stored in a panel on the exterior, as well as Luke's magnetic rope gun to be stored on the interior. I also bought the Cloud Car, which I do not think I would have purchased if TRU was not having a BOGO sale. The detailing on the Cloud Car is amazing and is not a simple update of the original from 1981-82. This vehicle is completely redesigned in every which way. Hasbro even incorporated design and action features that actually make sense. The separation of the cars, along with opening panels for missile systems and a completely redesigned cockpit system is the tip of the iceberg. I am going to be honest. I put a moratorium on vehicles in order to conserve space. That means no Joe vehicles as well as Star Wars vehicles. These are not toys. They look like movie props. Included are two pics to compare the size differences between the two snowspeeders. I will take any other pics upon request. I will be up for awhile. |

Great mini-reviews guys.
I will definitely be picking up a couple of these. Cobra has the ARC-170, so my Joes will get these to serve as their new Fighter/Attack aircraft. Yes, I know the snow speeder isn't an aircraft, but if the A-Wing and V-Wing can fly then it isn't much of a stretch to imagine a snow speeder flying. |

I thought the old star was snowspeeder was the only vehicle that was close to being in scale? Ive seen the box for the Bespin Cloud Car, had I found the snowspeeder, I would have bought both BOGO. Can you put up more pix?

Yeah add me as a +1 to both. The new vehicles are great. My only gripe is that the movie accurate harpoon launchers elaves an empty hole where the rope connects on the oversized harpoon. But that is just being nitpicky, both are awesome. Though I would only buy them at TRU on the BOGO sale, otherwise its ok to wait for the slightly cheaper prices elsewhere.
Oh and there will be another snowspeeder coming out this year, the deco sounds like it will be the same but it will be in 'vintage' packaging, much like the TRU AT-AT will be.

What no one has mentioned but I do think deserves an important point: the price. This snowspeeder is only $25. The Target exclusive was $30 but back in 2006 (I imagine it would be closer to $40 or $50 today). I think they are providing a great value for a cool toy.
