Yo Go Re of the incomparable oafe.net has an interesting article on the whole gas vs shipping debate, but even more amazingly, the article has a built-in calculator(!) near the bottom so you too can decide how much you're saving (or losing) by choosing to hunt or order.
OAFE - Points of Articulation: Win the War: Pay for gas or shipping costs? This should either be stickied, a permanent link added, or ask Yo himself if we can use the code to have one here on Hisstank, cause it seems to be a pretty cool idea. |

This thread needs a poll so we could see what the percentage of those posting prefers to do; hunt or order.
I'll say this, I found a Power Charge Rhino the other day at K Mart by accident and saved myself like $12 by not ordering. Just Saying. |

My car gets 35mpg in city (43 hwy), AND I drive by multiple retail locations to/from work. I will almost always hunt.
Not sure why people need a calculator for something that they should be able to figure out for themselves, however it wouldn't hurt to play around with it. I wonder how reliable the results are. Last edited by Brcall; 06-30-2010 at 04:20 PM.. |

Nice, I like it. If I found exactly what I wanted every time I went on the hunt, it would break even with average shipping costs. But, its rare I ever find something in one store and I'm done. So, yes, shipping costs actually save me money.
Because it took me 5 seconds to punch in the numbers and I was done. |

I was just about to report your post when I glanced down at my WWJD bracelet and decided to instead forgive you. Now this thread needs a second poll so we can find out how many of us give a "crap" what our fellow Tankers prefer. Just Saying. Last edited by CV2.0; 06-30-2010 at 04:23 PM.. Thanks for the link, Z. I've often wondered about this, as I 'd like to be as efficient as I can with my limited funds.
I will say this though, sometimes there's something about the actual "hunt" that makes things exciting.

One problem is the stores(Walmart,Target and escecially TRU) in my area take forever for stuff to show up.Our TRU is nutorious for dragging thier feet. Our area never saw the EU wave.I had to get those from other people. If we see the Star wars figures it will be September.Sometimes you have to order this shit online mainly because some stores either can't get thme in or just flat out refuse to get them in.

This "editorial" proves nothing, the hunt is overated, especially, when stores have spotty distribution, in my neck of the woods charge 9.75% sales tax, and are heavily, (and I do mean heavily scalped.) BBTS has a pile of loot feature, my shipping usually comes down to about 1.50 per item, and . . . no sales tax. It made me realize, "what is cheaper, paying a shit company like Walmart 16.99 plus tax for a DCU figure, which is about 18.65, and driving 42 miles to the nearest Walmart, (that carries DCU) and 42 miles home, my gas is 35 mpg highway and I live in CA where gas is expensive as shit. So about 7.35 in gas for the trip. Add it to 18.65 and I'm paying 26.00 for a single DCU, granted I usually want more than 1 figure from the line, but that's to say I get there @ 7am open to beat those scalpers. Also if I go I make sure to buy other things as well. Furthermore, if by happenstance I find something sooner @ a store, before BBTS gets it, they allow you to cancel your pre-order.
Also of note this man's Mattel analogy is moot, you can't get there items in "Bulls Eye store", or "Toys 4 Me", they are exclusive to Mattel's site. |
