I think some people are looking at the past with rose colored glasses. Go to YoJoe and look at each figure. Parts and heads were reused ad nauseum since the very beginning. In 1983, 16 figures were released, 2 of which were straight repaints. 2009 had 107 (!) figures released, not counting exclusives. Not to mention that in the 80's you were doing good to get a rifle, backpack and helmet, and figures like the Pit Commando has an assload of gear.
I love the old stuff a lot, but claiming that Hasbro just started repainting is insane. On top of that look at the subsequent years (84-90). Again the repaints that come were in theame sets (P patrol, Tiger Force,) and as someone pointed out the molds had not been seen in several years. Night Force is an exception of course. even 90's weren't so bad until the ending years when repaint-mania hit. And there were reuses like Steel Brigade and Hooded Cobra Commander, but not near the degree we see today. To say ARAH repainted "ad nauseum" is just plain unfactual. They did but not nearly to the degrees of what we see today. Seriously if Hasbro is having that much trouble keeping up with "107" figures, maybe the smart thing to do is scale it back a bit and quit giving us needless things like repaints of Croc master or 10 Snake Eyes or 30 Dukes or the Rainbow Neo Viper Squads. |

Now? Retailers (and collectors in many cases) want more variety and they want it NOW. I mean seriously, fans bitch and moan about waiting 6 months for Pursuit of Cobra? How much do you think we'll see if Hasbro only released 25 figures FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR (BTW, 2007 saw only about 20 single carded figures, and fans still clamored for more). As said a given figure may only be "available" for 3 months before Hasbro has to change things up, either for retailers or to give collectors something different to buy. The molds aren't cheap and repaints are the easiest way to get the most out of the tooling. If Hasbro released 25 figures in January and THAT was the ENTIRE figure assortment for the entire year, by MARCH fans and collectors will be clamoring for new figures.
