I doubt it happens. Of course they'd be approached about it. They're a cashcow right now. Even their "misses" generate good amounts of money.

Maybe someone cool like Gyre will buy Hasbro.
Though he will save money by never painting any of the figures and using any random color plastic to make them.

Did anybody besides me see the update? Hasbro said they're not interested in being bought out.

Like I said, no surprise they were approached.

I don't see this happening; they are posting record numbers in revenue. Plus they have the multimedia push with the joint venture cable channel. Hasbro is basically doing what Marvel is doing. Trying to expand their product reach to movies with product tie-ins that they actually own, not just Star Wars. Things like Transformers, & G.I. Joe, which make them more lucrative because they get a percentage of the movie revenue as well as the toys sales.
Their stock is double what Mattel is right now. And Mattel is supposed to be # 1 in the toy market. UPDATE: Hasbro Confirms Approached About Deal; Not Interested - WSJ.com And yes, while private equity firms can sometimes be good for startup companies, in cases like this they would most likely buy out Hasbro, cut staff & benefits, try to optimize profit margins further to make the company look better on paper, and either sell off to another private equity firm who would repeat the cycle or go public again and cash out. Companies like Simmons Mattresses had this happen to them repeatedly throughout the 80's into the 90's and led them into bankruptcy. Not a good practice at all for a company to have to put up with. |

A very similar deal happened to TRU a few years back and they're actually stronger now.
Also, with toy properties being the new hollywood trend it could be one investor group looking to do with hasbro what disney did with marvel. Still according to an after-the-bell WSJ article today, Hasbro is not interested. Still my hasbro stock did well for me today! |
