My father would resin cast things for models etc when i was growing up it a long process and very cost consuming i can only imagine how difficult plastics must be but there are several members of this and other online communities that do sell replacement parts not at evilbay prices. But prices being high well thats just good ole fashioned capitalism supply vs demand if someone has x part for x toy and you need it they can set the price they want because if you dont buy it for 15.99 plus 200 shipping and handling some other guy will and the cycle continues

I was wondering about this myself. I need the turret part that goes with the Desert Fox. I wouldn't care if it's in a different color because I would paint it from the awful original orange color anyway if I could find an original. But i can't find one on ebay or elsewhere.
I can see the logistical problems with some of this, and I understand that the process is expensive and that taking special orders could become expensive as well. Desert Fox 4WD - 1988 - Brown Gun Cannon - C9 - eBay (item 220422906720 end time Jun-21-10 09:04:38 PDT) |

As far as the plastic goes, broken arrow, trigate and similar customizers use high quality plastic, not the crap stuff you find at Michaels so the plastic costs are more than what you are pricing at crafts stores if you want to make quality replacements. /QUOTE] This. I am lucky enough to live really close to where Alyosha of Brokenarrowtoys lives and was able to go by there one night to pick up in person some of them items I bought from him. I was all excited about seeing how he does this sort of thing and thinking it was something I could get into doing myself but after seeing his pressure cookers and other custom deisgned equipment he built up himself and hearing how he goes a long way to a plastics manufacturer (only place in north texas he can get the material) way out on the northen edges of our city in a little remote town to pick up the highest quality plastic he can get to work with, I was like no way I can do this. I don't thave the resoruces nor the time to do it. And the other thing is sacrifcing the part to make molds and obtaining those joe parts. Creating and working the molds of the parts at times wears out the original part you have especially if your using it alot. As the mold breaks down you have to recast and so forth to keep the item quality high as an end product, youc an only cast of casts for so long. There is just a lot of overhead to run this and to make it turn a proft, unless you want to set it up as a non-profit org lol. As I look at it, time spent on the process in labor day to day, parts, quality materials to make the items from (junky plastics will not keep long term customers), shipping and or pick up of those meterials, the molding process and the equipment to do it right, parts aquisition to make the molds, experimental costs for tiral and error to get the process down and then finding the right parts people will be in demand for are just some of the road blocks I can see that can make this daunting. If you figure it out more power to you! I am sure I wll be buying stuff from ya if so. Last edited by CrimsonGuard101; 05-25-2010 at 11:26 PM.. |
