Seriously.
While going through Toys R Us yesterday I decided to look through the LEGO section and see what was going on there since I really haven't messed with LEGOs in a long time. I knew they had some licensed property based stuff, but recalled they generally were only briefly around outside of Star Wars. I have to say...what the heck!? MOST of the LEGO stuff nowadays is based off movies or shows rather then original stuff. To me, it seemed fine if it was a line here or there based on a movie, but it seems like they've been pushing away from individual stuff they used to do like Castles, Pirates, Space, etc...for licensed stuff more and more. The only things I saw still that were not based on a property were City, Space Police, and Atlantis stuff. I dunno why, but it kinda makes me sad to see that LEGO has become so license filled. To me as a child, the idea of building castles or space ships, or even stuff like ninja dojos was something you really could use your imagination for. Now everything is becoming Star Wars, Spongebob Squarepants, Toy Story, Indiana Jones, and Batman. I'm not saying they aren't interesting in their own right. (The Batman ones were really good looking) But I just feel the fact that LEGO offers less and less non-license based stuff kinda sucks. It makes me wonder if at some point that'll be all they offer on shelves since Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Harry Potter are coming out soon I read as well. Hopefully not as a number of the past things they did were good ideas like Power Miners, or the Castle series they did last as well as Pirates. I'd guess though its the sign of the times, eh? Licensed properties are more popular then original it terms of building stuff with LEGOs for kids? |

I think Lego has started to realize something...their stuff is expensive.
I mean I love Lego but man I had to give it up, the stuff is mondo wallet killing. And because of that Lego needed some crossover fan base, hence all the property tie ins. Be honest if Lego were to start making Joe stuff (not like the BTR line but smaller Lego styled figures like Star Wars makes for Lego) you'd be interested as well. |

I love Lego. THE best toy you can buy a kid hands down. I like the licensed stuff like Star Wars and the new ben10 etc. I Aldo feel that the whole Bionicle Lego action figure concept was genious and long overdue.
My only minor gripe is that they should make sets that allow you to build whatever you want. When I was a kid, I had this set that could make anything from a house to a 747. I built everything I could think of. Today's sets are highly stylized and can only build very specific things, though Im sure that if you have enough sets you can mash together some crazy cool stuff.

I was in toys r us once buying a Monsters Lego set (werewolf, vampire, vampire-hunter, mummy, etc.) An old guy there said he couldn't understand Legos that had pre-existing themes and it was all crap now and much better when it was just boxes of misc. stuff that made you use your imagination (that's paraphrasing... but it was basically that) Ha! Ha! These just aren't your granddad's Legos

I'd start buying Lego if they made a GI Joe line.

Lego has been around for a long time. They do have a pirates theme that just came out, but seriously how much can you do with pirates, city, knights, and space that hasnt already been done? Kids and adults want something with a theme along with their legos or else why buy them. STAR WARS is an amazing line and just keeps getting better, Atlantis and the XTReme Mining is still out there, Toy Story is out but that wouldnt have been my first choice. Lego can make anything or the potential to make anything, but kids lack imagination nowadays. They want what is linked to a license. If Mega Bloks comes out with a PELICAN for its HALO line, Im so getting it. If Lego would come out with a SPACE 1999 EAGLE ONE with figures, I would get in a heartbeat, not to mention the 3 or 4 other variants you could possibly make from it, not to mention the brick style would sooo fit the SPACE 1999 architecture. I doubt we will see other space lines other than the Lego version, Im sure Lucas killed off any chance for that, but I would love to see some one-shots just to see what they, Lego, would do. I dont blame them for license crazy, you gotta keep sales up and people buy what they want. I went nuts for the INDY JONES FLYING WING, bout damn time someone made it. Im not an expert, but I can do Lego and that is just fine. Just think if they get the JOE license where we can go with that and the scale would be perfect.......helllooo USS FLAGG and DEFIANT!!

I love Legos and wish could get more but so damn expensive.
It's just smart business. It's a hook. Star Wars fans come and buy the sets, then they see the other sets and other themes and just go from there. Does it limit the imagination building? Yeah but it's the same as when we were kids. Lego had knights, space, city. They had themed sets with stickers and such. The difference is that there were more boxes of generic pieces then there seems to be now.

I was way into the castle stuff yrs ago but like someone above said they have done it for many yrs and they know the tie in stuff will sell. Plus it is expensive! I'm a big Star Wars fan but never bought any of the Lego stuff, my collection is all Hasbro and its because of the price point not that I didn't like it.
