The more liscensed brands allows them more shelf space as well.
How much would they be producing if there were no liscensed brands? Some of them seem like stretchs (Toy Story), but if it works for them, great. Was surprised to see Prince of Persia, but the sets look cool. I would KILL for Lego to do Joes (as well as Traveler's Tales do a Lego Joe video game, looking forward to Harry Potter, I love me the Lego video games).

Legos are expensive, but they're worth it. I think a lot of the cost is associated with the oil market. Their employees also get paid VERY well, and have awesome benefits (I know someone that works for Lego in Denmark).
The company also has AMAZING customer service. If you lose a block out of one of your sets you can call/email them and they will send a replacement for free. Also, take into consideration that the things are almost indestructable (due to the high quality polymer), and they last forever. A Lego block from 30 years ago will fit a Lego today, and even the Duplo blocks will fit on the pegs of the smaller. In my opinion, they are the perfect toy. I think the Prince of Persia line is supposed to attract the Castle guys. Finally, I think Lego has a lot of nonlicensed sets: Pirates Castle City Miners Space Police Atlantis Agents However, most of the blocks found in sets are specialized, and that's a bummer. EDIT: Forgot the Agents. Thanks Troy! Last edited by Brcall; 04-16-2010 at 10:05 AM.. |

I think Lego just observed a trend, which is that people are very tuned into media these days, and hot/popular properties is what they go for. I think this may change as people get tired of everything including toilet paper being saturated with Star Wars, etc. marketing. I know I'm already sick of it. I got sick of it in the 90's. It is actually very hard to buy any toy in a Toys R Us that is not licensed-property related. I found this out when shopping for my nieces and nephew, for whom I do not wish to introduce licensed property addictions at a very young age. I'll bet Lego has a totally different offering in Europe that is less saturated with licensed media properties and the like. I still have all of my old Space legos from the late 70s and early 80s. I'll stick with that. |

You can still buy the tubs of Legos, and they aren't THAT expensive.

My son and I love LEGOs. It's the only thing he wants for birthdays, Christmas, etc. He has literally dozens of sets, most of them are non-licensed. The only licensed sets he likes are the Star Wars sets and they are definitely more expensive if you compare the average brick cost per set.
I agree that LEGOs across the board seem rather expensive, but the production of plastic is based heavily on the use of petroleum. And LEGOs lets kids be creative in ways that other toys don't. One of my son's favorite things to do is take the parts from different sets and try to create something new. You can't get that same level of creativity, engineering and planning from action figures or video games. If LEGO got the GI Joe license, I'd be so broke.

Many have said it already, there are plenty of original sets along with the licensed sets. Perhaps not enough basic kits, but I do not believe there are as many stylized pieces in each set to stop you from blending parts together....there is usually not more than 3 or 4 "exclusive" parts to a set (except on a VERY rare occasion). I think they have a good thing going....and the price believe it or not is, right where it should be. What's even better is that LEGO almost always hold or gain value. BEST TOY EVER.

I completely agree that Legos are the best toys ever.
They're what led me to the career I'm in. I very rarely ever made the sets, spent hours with a huge pile of pieces on the floor just making up my own space ships, cars, forts and bases for the Joes.
