Alright gang, I bought a master replica's force fx lightsaber off a guy a few months back along with a bunch of other star wars stuff. I decided I was gonna take a bunch of stuff to my comic shop today and see if they wanted it, that's when I ran into a problem with the lightsaber.
I hadn't really messed with it it too much and it never would come on when I hit the switch. I just figured it needed new batteries. So I finally figured out how to get the hilt apart and much to my dismay the batteries that were in there were old and had leaked all that white crap all over the terminals. So I scraped as much of it out as I could and put in the new batteries and nothing. So anyway, I would really like to get this thing to working before I take it to the comic shop. Any body got any ideas or know how to clean this up? |

Coke.
Seriously, any fizzy carbonated soft drink, coke, pepsi, whatever. You probably don't want to pour it all over the terminals (as I have done with car batteries) but drop some on, then go at it with afine brush, perhaps.

I've heard about the coke thing before. I might give it a whirl. Unfortuantely I'm a little bit leary of putting any liquid in there because the speaker for the soung effects is at the end of the hilt, immediately behind the battery compartment.

Eye-dropper? If you're really careful about how the liquid gets in there...q-tip, perhaps? Then you can put it exactly where you want it, and it won't be flowing around all over the place.

you can go to radio shack and where they have the soldering kits, they have these metal brushes.
They look like artist brushes with coarse metal bristles. I have used em to clean up wiring and soldering on the inside of toy trains. If its a sabre, I gotta think the area where the batteries are is pretty small...so those brushes might work. You can also get something called "emory cloth" probably from the plumbing dept in Home Depot..they use it to clean up copper pipe, but you can shred it, wrap it around a pencil and get in there and scrub. Or some basic 3M scotch brite scrub, but I dont think your gonna fit that in there. I just had the same problem with an old police scanner I found in my attic....used the brushes AND some emory cloth..threw the double A's in and it works like a champ. |

You can go to Wal-mart and buy a can of foaming stuff that cleans the dirty and acidic build-up from battery terminals. Spray it on, wait a while, clean it off.
Sandpaper = no. Pouring sticky soda all over your battery = no. The baking soda idea w/ brush is probably sound although I've never tried it. Have fun, get it cleaned, corrosion-covered battery terminals can leave you unexpectedly and inconveniently with a vehicle that won't start. |

Thanks for all the advice, I'm gonna try for the wal-mart foam cleaner first and then try the radio-shack brushes if that doesn't work.
Good thing there's no sith lords around today ;) |
