To me a "variant" is a variation or "running change" of the figure. A "chase" figure on the other hand is something the toy company purposely intended to do, only in less quantities. I think that the confusion of this is what drives prices through the roof on sites like Ebay. In any case when it comes to this figure I believe that the one with blue eyes and a blue arc reactor was first, followed by the one with blue that had letters and numbers, and then finally the corrected movie version which has red eyes and a red arc reactor as well as the white letters and numbers. I actually have 2 theories on this which I've posted once before in another thread. 1 - Maybe Hasbro received an early picture of War Machine from Marvel before the special effects were added. War Machine's eyes and arc reactor might have not had any color in this picture. If you look at the picture on the back of the package War Machine's eyes and arc reactor are white. Hasbro might have decided to go with blue at the beginning because both Iron Man and Iron Monger had blue eyes and arc reactors so they figured that War Machine would have the same color as well. The white numbers and letters might have not been shown to Hasbro at first as well. 2 - Maybe there is a scene in the movie that we don't know about where War Machine's eyes and arc reactor are blue before they are changed to red. Remember in the first movie when Rhodes wanted to try out the Mark II suit? Well maybe Tony Stark builds War Machine from that suit, or based on that suit. The Mark II's eyes and arc reactor were blue, so who knows. Maybe this played a role in confusing Hasbro as well because both the Mark II and War Machine are silver in color. These are just my opinions though.

It's most probably the first variant released before the running changes...

Now I see what you were talking about when you called me earlier. As you know I don't really care for different variations of figures. I always feel it should just be the one and that's it. Unless it's a change that makes it a different character or something.

you know, with the bad paint job on iron man figs, i wouldn't be surprised with all the running change and variant non-sense.

I still wanna get a blue variant without the Air Force markings to complete my War Machine army... I already ordered the blue variant(thanks Blackhive!) and I have the comic and red variant on the way as well... My green camo movie WM from the Kmart 3-pack will be the leader... D@mmit! Just as I was able to finally found a way to get the blue variant, here is another variant that I don't know how to get! Movie WMs are not here in the Philippines yet...

I went to WM yesterday and found 3 blue eyes, 2 with the lettering and one without. It doesn't matter to me if they are all tye-dyed. It's a pretty sweet looking figure.
