Finally, a serious toy related thread...(haven't had that in a while).
There are many ways to display our collectibles in a Diorama, but at what price...and what quality....and does the quality justify a price? Before you vote...consider the following additional information on each choice. Choice #1 - Cardboard Diorama $9.99 or less (8x10 Floor and 8x10 Back Printed design) Think GI Joe Vehicle Backgrounds Choice #2 - Cardboard 3-D Pop Up Display $14.99 or less (8x16 overall) Think Star Wars Jabbas Palace set that came out in 1998 Choice #3 - Cardboard Diorama Deluxe Small $14.99 or less (6x9 Floor and 6x9 Back with Interchangeable printed designs...and the ability to add your own artwork, also a Tray to hide unwanted accessories) Think...well..Cigar Box Durability Choice #4 - Cardboard Diorama Deluxe Large $19.99 or less (8.5x11 Floor and 8.5x11 Back with Interchangeable printed designs...and the ability to add your own artwork, also a Tray to hide unwanted accessories) Think...well...Cigar Box Durability Choice #5 - Plastic Diorama $24.99 or less (10x14 Floor and 10x14 Back Printed Design) 10x14 Think Action Figure Displays AFD on ebay Choice #6 - Plastic Diorama Deluxe $24.99 or less (8x8 Floor and 8x8 Back with interchangeable printed designs and the ability to add your own artwork, a holed base with peg assortment, stackable, and connectable) Think...well...this ones new to us Choice #7 - Plastic Diorama Deluxe $14.99 or less (Plastic Floor Printed Design On Cardboard Back) Think Ultarama systems Choice #8 - Do it myself via Craft Store. I like the idea behind Choice #5, mainly because the AFD displays are nice, but they are restricted to displaying just one. Unless the background picture was a big scene and you could put more than one AFD side by side for the full background.
It is a nice idea for those of us who do not have a big display area to put them, but you really are restricted as to what you can display on it, if there is only one background scene, which brings me to choice #6. Choice # 6 sounds like the better choice, for the ability to stack and connect them. The cardboard choices sound fun, especially with the space to hide unwanted accessories, but I think a plastic display would last longer. Ultrama systems look nice, but again, you are restricted to what you can put on them. They are stackable, and you can connect two to make an oval base, but you don't have the ability to connect more than two next to each other. With choice #6, it sounds like if there were generic (for lack of a better word atm) interior backgrounds for them, one could possibly have a display sytem and a makeshift base/hq/command center for whatever they decided to display on them. The ability to stack and connect them would make this base as big or as small as you wanted, depending on how many you had, similar to those MSG base kits. At least, that is what I get in my head when I think of choice #6. |

I still choose #6 overall as it would be better to build a larger diorama, but IMO #3 and #4 would be cool to display a small standalone scene, maybe something like "Combat Heroes", or a small line like "Star Wars Shadows of the Empire".

For space issues, as many people may not have a lot of space for these, I can see where 3 and 4 may come into play, but technically you could do the same standalone thing with 6, and yet still have the option to grow upon it if you wanted.
Cardboard isn't bad, I've got both Jabbas Palace and the Cantina, along with the TF cardboard Command Center and the Stars Base, but they really haven't stood up well to the test of time. Personally, I would prefer a plastic display, and as for a cardboard display, it would be a wait and see sort of thing. |

I'm illegally bumping this thread cuz I just have to say this.....
With all the Non-Toy related threads going on these days, and people complaining about not enough threads on customs or toys...I am wondering why a thread about displaying your toys is getting less love than...."shall I wear white or argyle socks today"?????? C'mon guys and gals place a vote and say something....anything....please?

I have to go with #6 just because of the options it holds.

I said #8 because building designing it myself is half the fun for me.

I think that is what draws me to #6.....it would give me a solid base to begin with and it's customizable....so I can apply my own designs and accessorize ......Damn, I sound like some sort of Fashionista! Double Damn....I knew the slang word Fashionista!

Penn Plax Aqua Plants & Plants Plus Artificial Aquarium Plants I used to have some cactus plants and bonsai trees that made for great displays. They were beautiful plants to begin with but add in a ninja sword fight and things would really pop. The place I buy my cacti also sales broken glass (from glass factories) by the pound. If you've never seen a 10 pound piece of broken glass, well it makes for a beautiful yet completely alien looking display. Crystals, faux-crystals, small polished stones are all pretty cheap but look like priceless gems when set next to Skeletor or Cobra Commander. CR's are the electronic industry's gift to diorama builders. One VCR can be bought dirt cheap but break it open and there is a wealth of circuit borads, gizmos and widgets for that high tech sci-fi diorama. |
