Right now, Star Wars is like a toy brand empire, everyone knows it, kids and adults alike love it. You mention Star Wars in any group of collected people, and they know what you're talking about. GI Joe however, is still new in people's heads (Kinda like how Star Wars was in the 90's. Large vehicles like the Falcon and Slave-1 were the only playsets they had for the longest) Sure GI Joe's been around for decades in one form or another but to most people, it's just a memory from their childhood, mention it and most people will be like "Oh yeah, I remember that" GI Joe is at the beginning, they've tried the $100 playset, they just didn't make something everyone wanted, give them time, they'll build up the fan base to the point where they can make these sets every year and then there'll be something everyone goes ape for like the AT-AT. But we have to show them if they're doing something right by buying it at full price, none of this, I'll wait till the Flagg hits 75% off before I buy it. If Hasbro sees that reproductions/updates of the huge vintage playsets sell well at full price, then they'll take a chance on making more, but if they see only 25% sold at full price and the rest had to be clearanced, they may not take that chance again. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, the AT-AT. Seeing this gives me the same feeling as when I first saw the BMF ("I MUST HAVE IT!!!!!") They took a cool vintage vehicle/playset and made it bigger with more features. This will be one of those that if TRU has a midnight madness opening of Star Wars toys, I'll be in line again to grab it as soon as I can (Just like I did with the BMF) |

I keep going back and forth in my head about this.....I have been waiting on this. I knew that Lucas and Hasbro would release this again, and it would probably look this good. However, while $99 is a decent price for this, in this economy, it's still a little steep to spend on a toy. Also, the size is cool, and I probably have room for it, but do I really? So once it's released and I see it at retail, if I am captured by it's magic, I'll get it.
Who am I kidding? I'm probably gonna get it.

The $100 price is one of the most compelling aspects of this toy, when you look at what else Hasbro has been selling at similar price points. The most recent is the Turbo Tank - and this will dwarf that "large toy". Or the Pitt. The BMF was quite a bit more - but it had tons of features, and that is what the AT-AT is being compared to. Below that you have the ARC-170 that is way over-priced (it was only $25 a few years ago, now it is $63!) and not nearly the toy. And what makes the AT-AT great is that it is something cool, immediately recognizable, and fun. (IMO, the Pitt was not any of those things; the Turbo tank was cool and fun, but not recognizable to the casual movie goer.) It MIGHT go on sale during the Christmas holidays, but I doubt many will be on clearance. In fact, I wonder if the AT-AT won't be hard to find.
