Man I initially regretted passing on most of the Star Wars stuff from the 90's. See, USA had aired the Star Wars trilogy SEVERAL times on TV back then, and I was ITCHING for new Star Wars toys. Lo and behold the releases of 1995. I ended up passing on most of them. I think it was primarily the lack of articulation.
Anyways I would go over to my friends house and play with his Star Wars toys, and kept wanting some of my own. Fast forward 10 years later and there I was still regretting on passing most of the stuff. Even the stuff from 2005 and before/after. By 2007, nearly every new figure was being made with "super articulation" as standard, and most of the vintage vehicles were getting modernized replacements, which were larger, more detailed, and infinitely better(for example, compare the 2006 Dagobah X-Wing to the vintage, and afterwards, you won't WANT the vintage one aside from Nostalgia; same goes for the recent Target TIE Fighter compared to the original, and the BMF compared to the vintage Millenium Falcon). So by 2007, I got into Star Wars collecting a lot heavier than before, and continue to enjoy it. Do I regret passing on the older stuff now? To be honest, no. This is the epitome of "good things happening to those who wait". My only regret is passing on a few vehicles here and there. For example, I passed on the Slave 1, and the AT AT. The AT AT was on discount for FIFTEEN DOLLARS back in the day at KB Toy Works. Not too long ago I read the news of a new AT AT this year(long rumored too). So now I won't regret passing on the AT AT. Or a Snowspeeder! A new Snowspeeder is on tap for this year for only $25. |

Good times. I remember when the POTF2 figs came out. I read it on some website back in 94 and completely forgot about it, until I was at a Payless (now RiteAid in Seattle area) and saw Luke and Han. Picked them up and that weekend my nephew got Vader and Chewbacca at a local Fred Meyers. That next week I was going to every Fred Meyers after school. Finally found them all, except Leia and I think 3PO. Soon after I went to the other side of the state for my last 2 years of college. Every friday, my friend and I would take the bus to Wal-Mart (at the time we did not have a Wal-Mart in the Seattle area) and found all of the SOTE wave and the wave with Hammerhead, Jawas, etc. I remember telling my parents about Lando (at the time he was only found at TRU). I remember coming back home for Thanksgiving and sitting at my parents house was a Lando. I could not believe how excited I was. I ended up transferring to UW, so I could be back in Seattle. I made friends with a guy at the local TRu that would call me whenever new SW figs came in. Every saturday I would get to TRU when they opened and wait several hours as they unloaded the trucks so I could find the newest figs.
I miss those days. It was so much fun collecting. I had set toy runs I did every week. Having my parents get the Wal-Mart exclusives when they went to their FL home. Good times |

You also have to remember the time too, when this happened it was IIRC the first SW action figures since the vintage line fizzled out. Now it's not so special and SW is such a huge overwhelming merchanding juggernaut. But at that time it was before even the special edition re-releases.... and there was a huge rush just to get a han solo figure and a luke skywalker figure. It was huge! I'd probably rate it as one of the most exciting collector moments of my collecting history. Now we get much better figures, but it's hard to match the intial excitment when POTF2 started.... I think. Heh I remember when it was just a big deal to have figures from all three movies represented at all in the first place like the line might not make it.

I remember going to the internet cafe, and checking starwars.hasbro.com to see if any new figures were coming out. I admit I got caught up in the craze, it was exciting but I was and always have been an opener, so I didn't get THAT caught up in it.
But I did pay a premium to get some of the figures because I just really wanted them. Like you all said they look like crap now, save a few pieces. The taun taun still looks cool for one. Man that was a fun time though, I was working at Taco Bell when the Special Editions came out so I managed to get all that cool stuff too. Still have an unworn "FEEL THE FORCE" game promotion T-shirt.

I got wrapped up in the craze as well. I had a store back in 97 and before that I had a mail order business. We would go to shows to sell our goods. We mostly dealt with vintage toys but we did manage to grab several cases of figs from a distributor. We were selling monkey face Leia,s for 30 bucks and Lando,s were going for 50. Crazy huh?
I do remember 1995.....I found the first wave at Service Merchandise and I was floored. Yes, they were buff, even the droids but I did not care. I also remember going to a Roses and picking up tons and I means tons of 3po,s and troopers. Man, those were good times........ |

This great, thanks for the post. I rmemeber all of this and I was sucked into the hype like a bit of grit into a Dyson.
Bonus was I had friends and my kid brother working at the local TRU so I scored big on a lot of these figures. Honestly though, I wasn't in it for the collectible nature of the figure or variants. I opened most all of mine so variants held little water with me. I open most all figures to this day so if I score a variant all I'm concerned with is getting the regular figure. What I find sad is the thousands of dollars I poured into my Star Wars collection onlt to replace almost every character with a better version. I bought all of the initial collection. Then I replaced all of them with the better versions in the following collection and so on and so forth until today I have my default character versions and several boxes of reject figures. I wish I had all the coin I spent on them only to downgrade them to less than custom fodder.

Though I still find it odd/amusing that most of the "valuable" early second-gen Star Wars figures are still packaging variations. |
