The Aliens thread inspired me to start this, but it's been something I've been thinking for ever since I started playing the single player missions in COD: MW 2 a few days ago.
I would love for Hasbro to branch out the GI Joe style of figure construction to licenses like this. Who wouldn't want figures of Soap, Capt. Price, Ghost, SSgt. Griggs, etc?

If we do, I'd assume they'd come from McFarlane. I believe they still have the license from the original line of COD figures.

The thing of this kind of speculation is this: Hasbro has to strike a balance between licensed properties (Star Wars, Marvel Universe) and in-house properties (Transformers, G.I. Joe). Licensed properties are more expensive to develop (due to licensing fees) and so Hasbro has to decide whether their estimated sales for a franchise would be high enough to warrant the expense. With "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" figures, they're essentially narrowing the market to "Call of Duty players" and then narrowing it further to "Call of Duty players that buy action figures." Certainly there'd be a little bleed over to "modern military figure collectors" but I don't see the bbi stuff at Target flying off the shelves. Further, since COD is a "mature" rated title in theory it doesn't have much traction with Hasbro's primary audience (Kids).
So basically, Hasbro would probably be better off going for a "EA Games license" or "Ubisoft Games License" than for any single game (though even that might be murky, because I'm sure licensing costs would also have to be split with the software developers, etc...). I don't know that it'll happen anytime soon, but it's probably only a matter of time before Video Games REALLY try to break into the multi-media business with more mass-market toy tie ins (as opposed to more collector-focused stuff like we tend to get from NECA and such now). Your last line is what I was thinking when I started this thread. There's been a lot of comparisons made between the release of Modern Warfare 2 and the release of a blockbuster movie. Here's part of just one news story: Quote:
If you think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has had a major impact on just the video game industry, you may need to adjust your expectations.
According to Activision Blizzard, the game's publisher, Modern Warfare 2 has set records across the entire entertainment industry. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the "biggest entertainment launch in history," Activision said in a statement. In its first five days of availability, the game set a worldwide record with about $550 million in sales, according to internal Activision figures. It's impressive. But more impressive is the list of launches that it beat out. In the first five days of availability, Modern Warfare 2 has eclipsed the largest worldwide box-office opening, held by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which tallied $394 million over its first five days. It also beat "The Dark Knight," which holds the U.S. box-office record with $203.8 million in first five-day sales.

I can only hope we will. I really would love to have a Price, Ghost, and Soap figure to add to my Joe ranks.
