Let's Be Honest About What McFarlene's Batmobile Did McFarlene's Batmobile Should Not Be Compared McFarlene v Spinmaster 27" Batwing Review My response to Articulated Ninja in regards to why these big ass vehicles aren't available at retail. Another dope analysis Ninja. I really appreciated the way you're able to articulate, (no pun intended,") in a rationale and concise way in your commentary. In regards to why these larger items aren't available at retail according to Emily it's because Walmart and Target doesn't want to devote the shelf space (and spend the money,) to ship these larger items. NEWS BURST!! Hasbro S.D.C.C. G.I. JOE Brand Team Roundtable Q & A Go to 32:50 - 37:09 of the clip. Why big items aren't available at retail? That's the part you're leaving out in regards to why brick and mortar locations, (i.e. Walmart, Target, and GameStop,) aren't carrying these items. It isn't that Hasbro and Mattel doesn't want to make the item available at retail per se, it's because the b & m's don't want to buy it. By the way, that's something else that always looked over in these discussions which is not only are Target and Walmart Hasbro's customers, they're Hasbro's biggest customers. Just like Hasbro made a course correction in the G I JOE Classified Series and went to a more vintage inspired design of the figures because the fandom didn't want the garish colors, Nerf blasters, and shin guards the "same difference," is applicable in regards to larger vehicles and playsets, big box retailers really aren't trying to buy them shits. So Corneilus, why did Walmart and and Target take the Batmobile and the Batwing? Simple, because those two items are the Batmobile and the Batwing. The Batmobile is the most iconic, popular, and easily recognizable vehicle in popular culture, (especially the '89 Batmobile,) the only other cars that can contest the '89 Batmobile as far recongizability, popularity, and iconic status are the Adam West Batman '66 Batmobile, the Batmobile from Batman: The Animated Series, (in addition to Prime and Bumblebee in their alt modes.) It's really an "apples and oranges," (yeah I said it, L.O.L.) argument in regards to why the Batmobile and the Batwing are offered at retail and the Hellcharger and the H.I.S.S. Tank aren't. It's because the general public knows what the Batmobile and Batwing are as opposed to the Hellcharger and the H.I.S.S. Tank. If I'm a buyer for Walmart or Target and somebody from McFarlene or Spinmaster pitches me an '89 Batmobile or a Batwing I'm takin' those two items all day, everyday because I know those two items are going to do numbers just off of the strength of mass appeal and possibility of "randos," outside of the adult collecting toy community picking up it as opposed to something like a Hellcharger or the H.I.S.S. Tank which only has appeal to a small demographic in a niche market. Despite being rather verbose in my comment the summary and take away is this. If the public wants big ass 1:12 scale vehicles and Hasbro, (or Mattel for that matter,) is willing to make them, but Walmart and Target aren't willing to buy the item then crowd funding the item is the only way to get the public the items that they want.

He's not wrong. The '89 Batmobile will sell and even if it hits a discount it will then sell even more.
I'm really surprised if McFarlane doesn't do an 89 Batman wave soon. Nicholson might be hard to get a license for but it seems like a no brainer. Look how fast TDK Batman and Joker sold out online.. |

One thing you missed in your argument, it isn't just because they are the batmobile and batwing, but that they are also featured in an upcoming movie. Cross promotional tie-ins give retailers a major hard on. Warner Brothers is also likely contributing because the toy aisle serves as marketing for the movie.

But IMHO they would probably sell well irregardless just because nostalgia is king and Batman '89 was like the revival of superhero action figures and the rebirth of superhero films. It's very much more likely Walmart and Target take a chance on that than on most large scale vehicles. People forget with TRU dead there isn't that retail store that is happy to dedicate half an aisle to one franchise and it's slew of items. As much as we bitch at Hasbro for little to no Star Wars vehicles at retail, let's face it - Target and Walmart just don't have the room. Jurassic Park big items tend to sit in different aisles than the actual other JP figures. I'm very much sure that's the same thing that led to a Batmobeast in Target - because it's Batman. If a good size Spider Buggy came out I could bet you'd see Target make the space simply because it's Spider-man. These corporations aren't big toy people - they see the big names and then jump on it even if no movie attached. |

Bruh, I am a "big toy person," (l.o.l.) and even I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on a 1:12 scale vehicle that wasn't Batman or original Star Wars trilogy related if I were a buyer at Walmart or Target. Hell, I daresay Walmart or Target would be VERY HESITANT to fuck with Princess Diana's invisible jet if it were offered for retail at 1:12 scale.

Supposedly they aren't that much in the movie.

These corporations aren't big toy people - they see the big names and then jump on it even if no movie attached. Batman, even with a new movie, doesn't guarantee retail interest. The Batwing is a gold label exclusive on the McFarlane store because the big box retailers weren't interested. The Spinmaster 1/6 scale Batwing (22" x 27") looks to be online only for Target, while the 1/18 Batwing looks to be only on Amazon. Retailers just aren't interested in making shelfspace for large vehicles. Probably a lesson learned from the slow moving ships from Lightyear. It's not that they don't have the room, it's not in their interest to make room from a revenue perspective. When looked at from $$$/sqft and sales velocity Target and Walmart would devalue shelf space by making room for the vehicles. |

The "big vehicles" for Star Wars 3.75" (BMF, AT-TE, AT-AT, Turbo Tank, etc...) may be much-beloved now but folks tend to forget that they were Clearance Aisle specials after Christmas every year they were out. Likewise the big Black Series offerings almost universally ended up getting clearanced out to varying degrees as well. We were almost at the point where Toys R Us was the only place carrying larger vehicles even prior to TRU going out of business, and when retailers other than TRU did carry them it was almost always only during the Holiday Season. |
