So I only got into adult collecting when the classified line started. And for various reasons I am only now able to start opening the boxes and putting them out for display.
And I am discovering I am very very bad at a key part of putting them out for display: getting them to stand up. I can't keep Barbecue upright, or any of the female figures. I might get them to stand for a minute or two, but they've always fallen over the next time I see them. I have the same problem with Marvel Legends. I can't get black series Star Wars Leia to stand up at all. What am I doing wrong? What else should I try? What have you learned as you've gotten good at it that I should know?

Well, figure stands are going to be the ideal solution, especially with the modern figures using softer plastics. Even someone like myself that has literally 30+ years' experience posing and displaying figures will come home to find that a bunch of figures have toppled ALL THE DAMNED TIME (especially on hot days).
Barring access to stands though, it's all about the center of gravity and using all of the modern POA to exploit it. You'll often have to move joints incrementally -like mm at a time- to get the proper position. This isn't really something I can convey via text on a screen, you have to get a feel for it yourself. Obviously all of the foot/leg articulation is key, but all other points will affect the balance as well. Keep at it, even the most geared up, top/back/whatever-heavy figure can typically be balanced.

So it sounds like part of my problem might be impatience.

Don't feel bad. That's the problem with a lot of us. You should see my Ikea detolfs. Im usually in a rush to put figures away but never have the time to correct or clean up the shelves with all those figures leaning on each other or outright piled on top of each other.

Figure stands are always an option. Still it's all about balancing them right. Some toys it may be harder than others due to weight and what not, but if you pose them just right, they should stand upright. Easier to do than it is to do than it is to explain I suppose.

You've hit on one of my main pet peeves with action figures. Especially ones that attempt "realistic" proportions, even if the feet are proportioned realistically, they are too small to adequately balance and keep standing, especially when a figure is all geared up.
This isn't just modern figures, just look at vintage O-Rings. They are far from realistic in style or proportions, but still, they have small feet, and they are a pain to stand up. I'd rather have the proportions a bit exaggerated or stylized, allowing for larger feet and more stability, than to have a rigid realism which results in "realistic" feet which mean everything needs a figure stand. Which, for me, just diminishes the "action" part of the action figure.

I see someone use sticky tack once. Makes it look like they are standing on their own with no stands. However, sometimes the stuff goes into the foot pegs and can be a pain to get out.
