I moved 9 times between 2001 & 2007. I've been blessed to live in the same house now for the past 12 years or so. Having to move a lot sucks. I don't miss it.

You know, I've come to realize that the act of moving itself is the only part I don't care for. I actually get to the point now that I just get bored of where I'm currently living and feel I need new surroundings- even if it's just a few miles up the road. I suppose that's also a product of having to move so much throughout the course of my life; I've become so accustomed to it that I almost require it now.

At one point does the line between collecting and hoarding get crossed? If you have boxes and boxes of stuff in tubs are your a hoarder? IMO those that have items displayed on shelves whether or not it is opened it or not, people cant actually see it, etc. then for the post part that is collecting. If you have tubs/boxes of unopened toys in another room piled to the ceiling you maybe crossing the line or close to it. I think though sometimes that line can be blurred like when people collect for the box art or card art. If the stuff is not displayed though and just put in the closet then what are you doing? Discuss if you like.
I’m getting to the point where if I don’t have room to display it then I don’t actually really like it that much. |

The only things I own at the moment that I've had for more than 6 months (barring my collection) are a solid pair of Corcoran field boots that I take excellent care of, my childhood Super Nintendo that I miraculously tracked back down after having sold it 20 years ago, and a bed frame that I built a couple of years back. I'm as minimal as one can be and still collect anything. I think the fact that I move pretty frequently has made me that way- I've lived more places than I have years on this earth.

I have been very surprised to find that a lot of things that I expected would be relatively worthless...aren't. At a minimum I make back what I spent (at the time) on dang near everything, and a whole lot of it I make a whole lot more off of. So I don't know about "investment" and that certainly wasn't my goal when I was buying the stuff initially, but in the long run I'm definitely making a healthy profit even after shipping/processing fees, etc... |

I've said this before in another thread of this type but I'll say it again - this is why I parted with 95 / 98% of my collectibles in favor of 3d printing. If it isn't on display and/or being physically used it has to go.
Having to design , post process , potentially paint and customize what you want truly clarifies how much you want it. I've made some items that i can't help but smile at whenever I lay eyes on them or drive them across the floor (rc). That's a feeling that had been largely missing from toy collecting prior to 3d printing. |

Collecting is what I call it. Hoarding is what my wife calls it.
Two sides of the same coin. Everyone needs a fun hobby. |

Yes, my wife calls my collecting hoarding, but after the vocabulary lesson in this thread, I will tell her I am simply prepping.
I do have some hoarder, or prepper tendencies. I grew up poor in a remote rural area, raised in large part by grandparents that survived the depression and the drought that preceded it. They saved and re-used everything. When my mom died a while back, I had to empty her house, which had been my grandparents, and they had gallon paint cans (which they had washed out and saved) filled with buttons and zippers, any time a piece of clothing could not be fixed, the buttons and zippers were stripped and saved. I have at times bought more than I need in terms of action figures. When I got into the hobby again around 2011, it was hard to find figures in my area so when new ones came out, I bought multiples to have customizing parts. And when they hit 5 Below, Ollies or Tuesday Morning, it was game on. I am not a completist, I only buy stuff I like. I like most GI Joe, but not all of it. I am much more circumspect with Star Wars and only buy TVC. My prepping is kind of paying off, I see prices have gone up and so by parring down, I think I might be able to break even between what I sell and keep. and, I have had a lot of fun doing all this so breaking even is a pretty darn good deal. |

I'm not a reseller by nature, and I usually don't look at a thing with notions of its resell value in mind (other than real estate or the stock market), but I've found myself doing that with toys. It becomes just another way to justify a purchase, "Well, I can always resell this and double/triple my money, and if I don't, someone else will." Thankfully, I recognized that early and nipped it in the bud. The last thing I need is more shit, whatever the reason. So I'm all about pairing it down to what I really enjoy. I notice I appreciate things more the less of it I have. So, if I get my money back or make a profit by selling stuff I don't want off, great! If I don't, that's ok too because the real point is to clear the decks of the unnecessary/unwanted and maximize my enjoyment in what I keep.
