Well, there's collecting, there's hoarding, but also worth mentioning, Investing. Some of us, like myself, also see a steady stream of monthly income from selling off chunks of our collection, and/or stuff we bought/stored and then the value skyrocketed. So in that sense, it's not so much hoarding as it is warehousing (or at least that's what I tell myself). I recently spent some time in my garage, going through my massive piles of opened/empty boxes. I realized, in my opinion, most of the old Star Wars Black Series boxes, likely aren't worth much, since there is no artwork on them, it's essentially just a plain black box. I've tried to sell them off on eBay in the past, and it's just not worth the time it takes to sell them and box them up. So I threw a bunch of them out to clear up space.

If I don't see it every day, I don't need it. Once I'm out of display room, which is rapidly approaching, I'm done collecting. In fact, with the space I've allotted to GI Joe, I have a limit in place already. I have room for around 150 more figures.
There's obviously no right or wrong way to collect, but it would give me anxiety to have shit piled up in the closets and shed.

I still have the uniforms for every job I had back in my teens (Dominos, Circuit City, etc), my old belts from Taekwondo, hell I probably have my old D.A.R.E. graduation trophy from elementary out in the garage somewhere. Not to mention Where's Waldo, Barenstein Bears, and Dr Sues books, the frame to an old Footon that hasn't been used in years, all my Psychology/Sociology text books from back in college, VHSs of old Playoff Chicago Bulls games.......as Cap would say "I could do this all day". LOL I assumed that's what over-sized Garages are for?

Do you think you are going to make enough money off any of that to justify holding on to it that long? Serious question not trying to be jerk.

i've moved 10 times since 2001. that's why nearly all my collection is in boxes still. i've lived in my home for 6 years now. that stuff i have started to get rid of. but if it's childhood stuff or something i can give to my son when he's old enough i'm keeping it. it's not like im keeping boxes of milk jugs with molding over milk or stacks of newspapers because. |

I would probably be considered a hoarder to some (my wife levels this accusation at me). I'm hoping to retire in about eight years and open a toy museum. There is no way my home can keep up with my purchases, even if I take over all of the kids' rooms once they move out. I need an abandoned Home Depot or something if I am going to properly display everything. We'll see where I am when I retire. Like I said, I hope to open a museum and spend the rest of my days curating my collection. |

Well, speaking strictly about my collection (and not all that other random stuff I have out in my garage that I jokingly talked about in my other post), I mean, it's not costing me a single penny to store it. It's just sitting in my very large garage. So it's not like I'm renting an actual brick and motor store or a storage unit. So I wouldn't need to make much to justify it, really. Those old discontinued star Wars Vintage Collection vehicles sell for a ton, especially if you have a nice minty box to go along with it. So sky is the limit, I suppose. I mean, I've had multiple sales this year, where an item sold for $100+, and I only paid $10 for it just a few years ago. Where else are you going to get 900% appreciation in just a few years time? LOL I've noticed, with eBay, if the item you're selling is the ONLY one on all of eBay, then....YOU ARE THE MARKET. You can set the price at whatever you like. And for a lot of items, it doesn't take long for the items to become scarce. Buy, hold, wait, sell, smile, repeat. Easy like Sunday Morning.

I would be interested in those old playoff game tapes.

Not necessarily a museum, but possibly my own section inside someone else's brick and mortar store, or my own website, or maybe doing a few toy shows annually. As it is now, I already have some of my stuff for sale sitting on shelves at a local comic shop downtown, for sale via consignment. Also, I'll have to see if I can dig those old tapes up, once the weather cools down, down here. I hate going out to the garage in this Florida heat.
