Someone is wearing their extra tin foily hat today. Majority of the big stake holders are hedge funds, mutual funds and ETFs. Not a singular shadowy puppeteer. Modern economics does operate on the idea that every business's primary goal is to maximize share holder value, but that's distributed across all shares so all ships rise regardless of how many shares you may own. The ideal way to accomplish this is thru putting out better services and products.
Incongruence is in the value collectors perceive themselves. In the larger scheme of things action figures aren't that important compared to other things like infant and toddler toys. Infant and toddler toys are like the meat and potatoes while the adult collector is the parsley garnish on the side of the plate. There isn't a large enough financial incentive to throw other production processes into chaos just to appease the adult collector community. If you honestly believe that's how the system operates, and you dislike it, then why continue to pay into it? Extricate yourself from the system. Restructure your wants and desires so you pay into systems that you find honorable.

Actually, there's quite a bit of angst ATM, particularly WRT the exclusive "The Clone Wars" retro-wave of Black Series figures, with many tales of woe featuring empty shelves, unfulfilled/canceled pre-orders, etc. From what I'm seeing, Power Rangers collectors aren't too happy about the distribution of exclusives in the Lightning Collection for that matter either. The Marvel Legends fanatics seem less restive in comparison, but that's probably because they're prepared to spend unthinkable amounts of money to get what they want.

Bearing in mind when its Target exclusive the rest of the world is missing out and hoping on scraps that Kapowtoys and co get in. I think its starting to effect demand over here at least, Snake eyes and Timber still up for order where as most GI Joe (bar Roadblock CI) are gone quick. Time will tell if this is a smart long term goal by Hasbro or an own goal :P |

On the other hand a huge budget doesn't guarantee success either. Just look at the SW Sequel Trilogy or the current Space Jam merchandise. Lots of money for tooling and marketing. Revenue goals would be sufficient to do those lines in. |

Exclusives in a nutshell are to get consumers to purchase from said retailer, and shop for other products while at said retailer.
It's also to drive sales at a proven retailer. Online exclusives same thing, you go to said online storefront for 1 thing, then shop for other products offered at same said online dot com. I'm sure the video posted says it more elegantly, but there's a lot of targeted marketing and resources that go into every products release including exclusive offerings
