Now don't get me wrong, GI Joe is always going to be #1 for me, and Hasbro's been good to us. However, Mattel is doing AWESOME so far with the MOTUC and other lines, and I think they deserve a shout out for what they've done.
1. Better online store, from the perspective of international collectors at least. I'm from Canada and I can't even order anything from Hasbro Toy Shop. Really, if Mattel, and countless other dealers can do it, why not Hasbro? No excuse there. 2. Mattel is successfully marketing BOTH directly to the collector, as well as to the mass market (i.e. kids). 3. Mattel's MOTUC figures are accurate to the original designs in almost every case. Mind you, that's easier since the original designs saw more reuse of parts than GI Joe did, on the whole (think O13-level of reuse). But still, Hasbro could do a much better job than they're doing with even just a few new parts (e.g. non-gloved hands, more figures with proper rolled sleeves, etc). 4. Mattel's MOTUC figures are better sculpted overall. I don't know if they've got any experience with the smaller scale, but could you imagine if we got cartoon/comic-accurate faces by the Four Horsemen? Not that the Joes are terrible by any means, of course. Of course Mattel, and specifically the MOTUC figures, have their downsides too - mainly the extremely limited availability/time in which to purchase these, and the price - but I've got to say that, overall, I'm more impressed with what Mattel's doing than Hasbro. It's nice that a huge toy company worth billions of dollars have carved out a niche in order to cater exclusively to the collecting community. It would be interesting if Hasbro could/would do something similar. The GIJCC has proven that a certain number of people (myself included!) will pay ridiculous prices for exclusive GI Joe figures... I don't see why they couldn't recreate that on a larger scale - roughly the numbers MOTUC figures are produced in, and bring down the price to maybe $15/figure. Quality would be key - even if parts were reused, they can't be the rushed or otherwise poorly thought out figures like Leatherneck or Wet Suit. You'd need people like Alyosha to work out a good mix of new parts and a minimum amount of reused molds. Nostalgia is also a key factor - much as some might disagree, or prefer new designs, I think that, by and large, the original designs are the way to go. Nothing against the new stuff, of course - presumably that would be available at retail anyway. Thoughts?

Hmmm. Mattel don't make Star Wars or the Joes or Transformers. So if your argument that Mattel is better than Hasbro is (in my opinion) wrong. Just because the MOTUC is the only thing they got going for them doesn't make them better than Hasbro.

Have you seen the DC infinite heroes line. Hasbro is killing them with the 3.75 lines.

They've also failed to make their SDCC exclusives available online at the stated time.
Edit: Disregard, I failed to correctly read the date. Anyway, while I do think Mattel is quicker to listen to fans, but I don't really see either company as being superior to the other right now. Both have QC issues, both have distribution issues, but all said and done, both do a decent job sometimes, and clown it others. Last edited by LG; 07-27-2009 at 02:26 PM.. |

It's a helluva lot easier to make excellant figures when 75% of the parts are reused and you only make 1 every couple of months and charge 30 bucks for it.
When MOTUC starts being mass produced and mass marketed like G.I. Joe is, then the Mattel vs Hasbro comparasions will have merit. Until then, anyone can produce a top notch figure at that price point and only 1 every couple months.

Oh yeah, Mattel's mass produced line that is similar to the Joes. Those figures are horrible compared to Joe.

I've definitely been more pleased with Mattel recently than Hasbro. Mattel had a really great showing at SDCC, a lot of nice stuff for the fans. Hasbro shows off a bunch of ML's, only a few of which will actually supposedly be made, and additionally show (and then pull) the long awaited 6 inch Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo, and reveal that they have no plans to release them either. Boo on the Hasbro customer relations front for sure.

matell is also knocking the dc universe line out of the park. Their distribution is a little poor, but the quality of the figures is top notch. I know the 4H are just starting to have more input in the infinite hero line so i expect that to get better as well. That is one of the worst lines they have imo.

I was just thinking about how much it sucks if you're new to the MotUC line and you can't get He-man or Skeletor. I'm looking at the list of figures, and what's the friggen point if you can't have the two biggies?
I know we complain that there's too many Duke and Snake Eyes, but at least no Joe fan will ever have to be stuck with second and third tier characters because they missed the boat on the main heroes.

ARE YOU SERIOUS????
This is a joke thread right? Mattel sucks. Mattel sucks donkey balls. Mattel sucks donkey balls hard. Serious, MOTU is a joke. Every month its like anxiety central because you have to get online right at noon cause if you don't that figure you want is going to sell out in 35 mins. Plus they have that damn RED SCREEN OF DEATH. Listening to their online community? HA! That's a laugh! Look at how they screwed the MOTU fans by releasing that Art book to just the con! People have been waiting years for a book like this and what does Mattel do, sell them to resellers and only print 1000 copies. That is just stupidity and bad decisions. Their online store sucks as well. You can't buy DCUC of DCIH figures or any other Mattel product. Only the stupid stands. That isn't an online store, it's a poor excuse for an online store. How many people lost out on MOTU figures because of their crappy website. I think you need to reevaluate your position. As far as I can tell, Hasbro keeps fans in mind and doesn't screw them over like Mattel. Oh, and their mascot, Matty Mattel, every time I see his stupid smile I want to punch him in the nuts. To quote Samuel L. Jackson, "MATTEL YES, THEY DESERVE TO DIE AND I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!"
