Speaking as a huge Barbie fan, I think they're starting to cater to the fangirl segment better than Hasbro does. What does Hasbro have for females? Besides Littlest Pet Shop, My Little Pony and the way better quirky green striped stocking revamp of Strawberry Shortcake, Hasbro doesn't have much to offer the older female. I believe their last foray into that territory was the set of Destiny's Child dolls about six years ago.
And when I say fangirl, Mattel is trying to get the segment that loves fantasy/sci-fi. They've done Star Trek (twice), LOTR, The Addams Family, The Munsters, POTO (With a deformed Ken), The X-Files, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Laugh-In (So that's not fantasy, but that was a great show and the painted lady Goldie Hawn is my favorite this year), Disney, James Bond, King Kong, Sanrio, Hanna-Barbera, Speed Racer and Hitchcock to date. And now the inevitable release of "Twilight" for Halloween- So, when it comes to miniatures and feeding my love of pop culture, I have to go with Mattel. (Although Tonner has them beat in some respects.)

That is, of course, not based on any sales figures (which I don't believe are released to the public anyway) - just my perception at the time.

Like I said, Mattel underestimated the demand and some employee(s) - not the company as a whole - really screwed the pooch at SDCC, but despite that, you're missing out on some great figures if that's the only reason you won't buy them. They're worth tracking down.

Yeah, I was under the impression the plans to re-release He-Man and Skeletor might have changed... possibly due to Battle-Armor He-Man coming out?
Your last point is a good one, but given the quality of figures Mattel has chosen to do so far, and what is coming out in the future, I'm confident enough to put my money on the table. With Hasbro... meh, it's too hit or miss. When you've got a figure like, say SE V1 and V3 on one hand (V2 got it right in the end, but they took a while with that one), and then you've got Leatherneck or Cutter on the other, I just don't have the faith that every figure will look as awesome as the best ones they've put out. With the Mattel subscription, yeah, I'm taking a chance, but I think the odds are pretty good given what we've seen so far. Quote:

If you're someone who's a little more choosy about who you pick up and who you don't, not so much. Frankly, the subscription comes across as toy-extortion to me. "Our figures are hard to get, so commit to sending us $260 bucks so you can be guaranteed to get yours! It's way cooler than us just upping the production to actually meet demand!"
