And I've always hated it for two reasons: lazy world-building and the fact that many if not most Halo fans whom I've interacted with can't seem to understand that Catherine Halsey is both a war-criminal of the most egregious sort and a truly monstrous mad scientist. Instead, they seem to have this Spartan Stockholm Syndrome thing going on where they see her as a surrogate mother.

i dont remember any of this stuff. i dug out my all my halo games to trade into a toy store down the street from my house and only kept odst and reach. the toys are cool, the designs are mostly cool, multiplayer was fun for the time, and i want a slave 1 vintage collection (i have more stuff in the to trade pile).

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove paint from these figures? I don't want to accidentally warp or damage the plastic or the details underneath. I have a Hyperius that I'd like to repiant/customize to make a battle troll or something similar for my BFS figures. Thanks in advance!

or just paint over it. if you mess up your paint, the best thing i've found to remove that paint (any, like spray paint, model paint, craft- whatever) is la's totally awesome yellow cleaner from dollar tree. you can also order it on amazon. just soak it in there a few minutes and the paint wipes away. it even loosens up fiberglass resin (which i use to fill my push molds) Last edited by THEDARKONE508; 01-04-2022 at 09:16 AM.. |

Follow safety recommendations and all that, blah blah blah...but I use Oatey clear PVC cleaner. It's methylethyl ketone so you should wear gloves and have good ventilation and so on, but a q-tip dipped in mek (wipe excess off on the rim of the can, you don't want it dripping wet) and gently rubbed on the painted area removes paint instantly and I've never had problems on soft plastics. Hard plastics can end up with a glossy appearance, presumably because the surface layer briefly melted until the mek evaporated, but action figure heads, arms, and legs have never had any ill effects for me.
For reference, if you ever do plumbing work and you use the purple cleaner on a PVC pipe before applying the PVC cement, this is that same cleaner just without the purple dye. They only add the purple dye to satisfy building code requirements to make it easier for inspectors to see that the PVC was properly cleaned prior to cementing, so if you ever do PVC plumbing and have used the purple cleaner just follow the same health and safety practices when working with the clear stuff.

I'd say that's a lazy defense of bad writing.

Ultimately, it's only one Spartan-II, John-117, who really matters in the overall war against the Covenant, which goes back to the writing issue: Halo is, narratively, a very awkward spot-weld between pseudo-hard(ish) mil-sci-fi and a bunch of heroic fantasy "chosen one" tropes (hence all the bullshit in the first game about the Master Chief being "The Last Spartan"). And wars have been lost (or at least lost more quickly) by one side throwing valuable time and resources at the development of dubious superweapon projects that starve conventional forces of much-needed materiel (remember, each suit of MLOJNIR armour supposedly costs as much as an entire UNSC space-navy warship). Halo is really only tropish retroactively. It was the rise of the YA novel movies that turned the "chosen one" narrative into a cliche, and it's negatively impacted characters like Masterchief and Luke Skywalker. There wasn't a whole lot of that in 2001. It's kind of impossible to make a game not look like a chosen one narrative when the whole fictional universe requires the protagonist to be essentially immortal. Quote:
Your attempt at framing might carry some weight if it was aimed at James Ackerson's Spartan-IIIs, who actually were manufactured to stave off the looming extinction of mankind, rather than Halsey's Spartan-IIs, who were merely terror-weapons intended to bring the restive outer colonies fully back under the jackboot-heel of the UEG.
LOL. When I play Halo 3: ODST, wandering the deserted streets of New Mombasa trying to track down the other members of my squad, I'm engaged. Reading about Halsey's shenanigans is by contrast an exercise in frustration (and a bit of worry that the writers might actually sympathize with that Echidna and her murderous worldview). Being pro or anti Halsey is likely a matter of viewpoint. If one looks from the endpoint backwards then no sin is unforgivable in the face of extinction. In contrast, from the midpoint the things Halsey did to the kids, their families, and the flash clones is terribly monstrous. Plenty of folks on both sides, and it's fun to see how that plays out in the creative teams that are assembled. Unfortunately I did. The Traviss trilogy along with Bear's Silentium trilogy are what convinced me to stop reading Halo books all together. The Halo novels had been dropping in quality for a while but plummeted off a cliff after 343 was put in charge. |
