Should a piranha try to eat a giant shark?
Hasbro is a toymaking beast, while Mattel is struggling badly. So if one of those companies were to buy the other, it would surely be Hasbro buying Mattel at a discount rate, to help them get out of debt. The two companies have similarly amazing histories, but right now there is no comparison -- Hasbro is strong and Mattel is weak. Another possibility is that they could merge on semi-equal grounds in terms of corporate identities, but with the current Hasbro shareowners getting proportionately stronger control, and the current Mattel shareowners getting proportionately less. But either way, there's no way the weaker company is going to devour one much stronger. However, with Mattel in debt, import taxes on toys from China about to hurt sales during the critical holiday sales season, and Mattel facing likely legal problems as well, Hasbro might be smarter to just wait things out. They've also expressed a lot of interest over the last couple years in trying to develop media, somewhat like they did in the 80s with Transformers and GI Joe. That's an expensive and risky thing to do, since movies and tv can be hit and miss, so they might be better off avoiding extra risks like Mattel right now anyway, even without the stress of the trade wars and trying to switch manufacturing capacity to other countries. Finally, Hasbro has a Star Wars licensing renewal choice coming up next year, and sometime soon, I think an MCU and Marvel Legends one too. (I think?) So there is yet another reason, on top of the trade wars and manufacturing moves and media development, why Hasbro might be smarter to stand pat. |
