Hey Tank,
Hasbro has consistently told us that 3.75 is a non-viable/non-profitable scale. I personally have interpreted this to mean that the profit per unit is just simply much better for 6" than it is for 3/75, not that it's not necessarily profitable (which is not based on anything empirical). Looking at Mattel's WWE line, they produce two brands- the 19.99 and up Elite Series, which is in line with most other such 6" lines in terms of articulation, accessories, and detailing. But they also produce a 6" Basic line, which features less articulation (by only two points- so still quite a bit), generally, no accessories, but still high quality detailing and head sculpts. this line sells at 9.99. How does this jibe with what we've been told about 3.75", wherein a Marvel or Star Wars figure with reduced accessories, articulation, and detail is not viable at 12.99, but a better quality 6" product at 9.99 is? Is it just the raw volume of units Mattel's WWE line is able to move? I understand that the 6" scale well outpaces the 3.75 (whether by choice or necessity), but logistically, it seems odd that a line (that essentially competes with itself) is able to produce what they can produce for 9.99, but 3.75 can't- as I wholeheartedly believe that 3.75" figures would sell much better below a $10 price point (especially for what we've been getting at retail from Hasbro in that regard). Thoughts?

My thoughts are I wish theyd produce more "classic" wrestlers form the late 80's early 90's on the 3/34" . so far we only have warrior, undertaker, macho, and hbk. would LOVE to see more like Hogan big boss man , earthquake, barbarian....ect.

According to Vala, the cost of the two scales is pretty much the same, it is really the number of parts that is the cost differentiator. Plastic quantity and shipping weight make a small difference in cost, however the price they can garner is just so much higher in the 6 inch Hasbro lines. Plus the seller gets a higher return on shelf space allocation. It is win win win for the entire supply chain, except of course, for the buyer's wallet.
With mold reuse and limited paint apps/parts, a $10 basic line is very possible. Do you really want t-crotch 6 inch Joes though?

Star Wars carries a licensing cost that I assume is higher than wrestling figures but I'm not sure how much that factors in. For Hasbro to do Joes is obviously license-free which should make it all the easier. But, as has been said, 6-inch is perceived to be worth more while costing basically the same to produce as 4-inch. That means it can survive lower demand and smaller production runs since the price is already overinflated. The goofballs who buy 6-inch figures will be happy to keep paying for them at prices they'd never support in a 4-inch line even with the exact same quality. The buyers just feel like it's worth it because...it's taller and heavier, I guess?
So, the way I see it, a few 1:12 zealots at Hasbro killed the 1:18 Marvel line on purpose to coerce people into 1:12 Marvel to get their foot in the door. Then they added 1:12 Star Wars and turned 1:18 Star Wars into 5-PoA trash (while giving super-articulated 1:18 a 30% price hike and eventually making it a retailer exclusive), and stopped making Joes all together. Then they assure us 1:18 isn't viable. Personally, I don't believe them. I just think 1:12 is easier to faceroll and still make money on and they're being lazy.

IIRC the Star Wars license fee is 17% plus a rather substantial annual upfront payment from Hasbro. $350 million annual payment last year?!? I don't think the Marvel cut is so deep, but I am sure Disney will want to "harmonize" their licensing scheme and get their pound of flesh.
If I was Hasbro, I'd drop the SW license as the brand has been a sinking ship for the past two years or so. It definitely was the killing blow to TRU.
