Dang, Mattel is doing much more poorly than I expected. Mattel is laying off 22% of their staff soon.
Megaconstrux sales dropped.... again. So, yes, not having product in stores to sell not a good thing. Monster High, American girl doing pretty badly as well. The fisher price and thomas tank engine ones were per-dominately caused by the Toys R Us closing since Toys R us had large swathes of their store dedicated to those. Cars themed toys decline they should have expected. Here are the sources. --------------------------- (sources) --------------- After Low Q2 Sales, Mattel Cutting 2,200 Jobs - The Toyark - News https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/25/new...ffs/index.html https://seekingalpha.com/article/419...all-transcript "Bright spots were few: Barbie sales grew 12%, and Hot Wheels sales were up 21%. Enchantimals and "Jurassic World" toys sold well too. That's about it. Sales of "Cars" movie themed toys, Fisher-Price, Thomas & Friends and Toy Box toys were particularly awful last quarter. American Girl doll sales tumbled 32%. "Monster High" and "Mega" toys stunk too. As if that weren't bad enough, Mattel had to compete with higher materials costs as the price of oil and other commodities soared. Sales in China fell as the economy slowed. So Mattel's profit margin fell sharply from 41% to 30%." |

Well I guess all of the DC 6 inchers that warm the pegs aren't helping either.

They have a *solid* action figure format with the MegaConstrux figures, but the whole brickplay thing is holding them back, imho. Brickheads are completely in the thrall of Lego and it's time to give up the hope of stealing enough of them away to prop up the sales of the figures everyone actually likes and wants.
Imho. |

Imagine the is awesome, the DC line in particular but they seldom release anything anymore, also the playset used to be awesome for imagine the but now they all kind of suck and are simple when they were huge and had all sorts of features in the past. It looks like they may finally have the multiverse on track , I just fear it is to little to late. The Clayface wave is fantastic and the upcoming assortments are back to basics with comic figures rather than Dark Knight and arrowverse characters. But again they do not release these with the frequencythey should, most of the stuff shown at SDCC this year was shown at Action Figures Times a week after SDCC 2017.

Also like Hasbro with Joe they have an evergreen property in MOTU but are not doing anything mainstream with them. Get those MOTUC figures in stores for 15 bucks and they will sell, it can be done lol at the new Mego line 14.99 and with cloth accessories.
Also Mattel’s WawW line has to many repeat characters, and they killed the ten dollar line by reducing deco and articulation. That line was HOT with us Wrestling collectors but many , myself included have left it due to lack of getting neenlegends and Cena and reigns in every wave |

I found these parts both interesting and relevant to our 1:18 desires (all quotes from the seekingalpha page linked above):
Quote:
Moving to Toy Box. We continue to execute on our strategy to transform the business into a more stable and profitable innovation portfolio. As expected, Toy Box faced a tough comparison (00:09:38) to last year's launch of Cars 3. However, this is partially offset by the successful launch of Jurassic World which according to NPD was the top growth property and a top 10 overall property in the U.S. for the second quarter.

Another important priority is the expansion of our capabilities in online retail. We have been evolving and advancing the way we sell our products given the change in the global retail environment and the shift to e-commerce. Our progress has established a strong foundation and we believe, given the strength of our brands, there is a lot more value to capture.
In the first quarter, Mattel continued to be the number one toy manufacturer in e-commerce sales in the U.S. according to NPD. We still have to accelerate our channel segmentation strategy and capabilities so our consumers can engage with our iconic brands and products in customized and optimized ways. This is an area of focus for me. And as a company, we will be increasing our investment in this important area. I look forward to providing updates in future quarters.

That’s what they get for selling off MotU to Super 7.
I jest. Last thing any working man/woman wants to see all re people lossing their jobs. Like the auto industry in Michigan or coal mine towns in Virginia or Pennsylvania I’m sure that Mattel employs entire generations of local towns in their area. It is sad news.

Your guess is as good as mine.
Mattel's internal politics always seemed like garbage to me. A lot of double speak and responsibility dodging and sudden cancellations. I'm afraid every year Mattel's reputation within the industry goes down every year because of weird stuff and backpedaling like this. Quite a few insiders I know never forgave Mattel for what they did to Monster High, which destroyed sales. So this isn't really a new thing. Toy Fair 2018: Monster High Closed Down |

I am sad that any toy company is struggling. At the same time, I walk through the toy aisles every time I go to the store and find zero things I want to buy.
Dear Mattel: Make things I want to buy, and I will give you money. I realize this is hard for you to grasp, but that's kind of how this works. Last edited by solosam; 08-16-2018 at 09:12 PM.. |
