I stopped by Toys R Us today. It was packed to the gills with product. Pegs were FULL. Shelves were FULL. They must be clearing out the warehouses and stuffing it all in the stores. It will be interesting to see what they can sell thru before they close.
As I was walking down the ENTIRE AISLE of Tru Heros product - I couldn't help but think that 'maybe' the closing of Toys R Us could be a good thing for GIJoe - and action figures in general. I always hated that Toys R Us simply made their OWN GIJoe line instead of supporting Hasbro. Seemed like a 'shooting yourself in the foot' moment to me. Opinions? |

Well, if KB Toys is actually coming back, maybe that will mean a resurgence of 1:18th stuff all around. If they’re smaller, mall size stores again, they might not have enough space for all the 6” lines on the pegs. Wishful thinking, I’m sure.

I don't know if TRU closing would be good for action figures. TRU stores have the largest space dedicated to toys/action figures. Now, it will probably be Walmart and Target - with a few aisles at most dedicated to action figures. Plus, I don't think Heroes really competed with Hasbro action figures, but if it did, I think competition was good. Heroes were cheaper. Without a cheaper alternative, it might actually drive the prices up bec they're the only game in town.

If the reports are true that most of there stores were profitable and the main reason they went under was bad investments against their real estate.
Then someone will look to get that business, so I would be shocked if some toy store chain does not rise out of this. |

There's a huge difference between 'we were profitable if you ignore the backstabbery of new exectutives' and 'the industry was profitable enough to incur the metric shiat-ton of start-up costs involved with creating a new nationwide toy chain from scratch'.
Also, I could see Chap Mei (they make the True Heroes stuff, right?) pulling out of the USA market entirely. Without the deal of a dedicated distributor, they may simply not see enough profit and will focus on elsewhere in the world like M&C Toys do with their future World Peacekeepers stuff. |

well I think anytime you lose a aspect of competition it is def not good. I think toys rus going down is bad in the sense that it really was a spectacle to see a warehouse of toys as a child. that part is sad and I think def not a good thing.
As far as gi joe goes, TRU was the only store that would support it, so its def bad. But if with TRU now gone if walmart specifically went all in on the next gi joe line and movie than its gonna be a good thing cause walmart has so much weight and influence that we would prob get a really nice toy line from hasbro and not the bare bones line that they made as a TRU exclusive. I had no problem with the true heroes line at all, It really was a big vechicle line which GI joe was not (in modern times) so I dont think it mattered. I think one thing that totally hurts toys nowadays is a lack of continuity in the scale and business model. To me children will always find play value in figures vehicles and play sets. I dont know why Hasbro and mattel moved away from that went with the current systems of Budget line figs COllector Figs HUGE figures Role Play gear. that system sucks balls. TNMT did really well and so does Imaginext cause they use the Old system. I think this is a major issue in toy sales and children seeing value in toys and fun in general.

WalMart? The WalMart that de facto owns Lanard, who are now the de facto 18th military toyline which just so happens to be gaining market space and respect with the Kong/Rampage sub-brands? That WalMart is gonna go full-in on a competing toyline they get less of a profit share off?

I don’t think it’s good for G.I. Joe or toys in general. TRU has been the only place you could get Joes for the last few years, during non-movie periods. They also carried NECA and other cool stuff you can’t find outside of comic shops.
