Hey guys, there about a zillion iterations of (Star Wars) stormtroopers on Amazon from all the years... but is there a line of 3.75" SW characters, Stormtroopers in particular, that have all the modern GIJoe points of articulation? Most especially the legs being able to splay, nothing is worse than just front and back, which it seems most of the SW 3.75" toys can only do.
The wrist bendy for better gun holding is a plus, but not a must. |

You'll need either a vintage collection one or a 3 3/4" Black Series one.

The Vintage Collection had basically the same Storm Trooper (VC41) only with a removable helmet. I'm not sure if there is a price difference on eBay or not, but just so you know they are the same mold, body-wise, except for the back of the upper torso. The Vintage Collection is also slated to return to retail next year. They may release the Storm Trooper again in some version, so there is always that hope. To answer your broader question regarding a line of Star Wars figures in 3.75" with the best articulation, you will be looking for "Vintage Collection" and "Black Series" figures, but even among those not all figures are made with hips that allow the legs to spread. You will need to look up the figure you are interested in to find out if it was built with the dreaded swivel hips or not (or swivel shoulders or elbows...because they have done that kind of thing on occasion). I tend to use the Research Droid Reviews page at Jedi Temple Archives to check that out because those guys go pretty deep into features in their reviews (often far deeper than I care about, but the passion is evident and at least you know they probably haven't left anything out). There is also a helpful catalog of Star Wars figures at Jedi Business that is organized by toy line and where you can also get a list of all versions of a given character irrespective of toy line. I find the photos and feature descriptions sometimes a bit lacking on this website, but the catalog of figures is pretty handy and is overall more comprehensive than the selection available at Research Droid Reviews. Oh, and the 3.75" Black Series First Order Storm Trooper figure has ball-hinged wrists...so if the regular Imperial Storm Trooper isn't already expensive enough, you COULD buy a First Order Storm Trooper and swap the hands out to get a fully-articulated Imperial Storm Trooper. Personally, I would be thrilled to see an all-new mold of the Imperial Storm Trooper released with "full" articulation (ball-hinged shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles; ball-socket hips rather than ball-hinged hips; ball-socket torso; double-hinged knees rather than ball-hinged knees; ball-socket neck...maybe even a hinged neck peg if we're really being ambitious) with excellent range of motion on all of those articulation points so they can pull off two-handed weapons and a variety of comical death poses. That would be a great surprise for the 2018 Vintage Collection's return.

The way they do the ball-hinge hips on SA Star wars is annoying because you can't get a natural sitting position. But Star Wars collectors seem to have favored aesthetics over function for decades now.

Thanks for all the details and link, man! Very helpful.
I don't know anything about the SW toy universe, just looking to get a couple of stormtroopers to flank a Darth Vader I found at a yard sale. But he is really crap compared to my Joes to pose! I sliced off his biceps since they have the weird diagonal swivel, and inserted black Marauder elbows and hands, but there's nothing to do about the legs. At least he's molded in a nice wide enough stance. |

this guy might be a healthy compromise of poseability and price. i army built these guys back in the day and will be breaking them back out soon.
plus he comes with a nifty weapons rack display piece. Stormtrooper - POTF2 [FB/CT] - Basic Research Droids Reviews - JediTempleArchives.com - |
