Man, some people really don't take care of their toys. I am so glad we have a Ultraviolet disinfector. I would not be surprised if some of these toys were donated because they were such a pain to clean or someone knew these people and didn't want to deal with their things.
I've encountered cigarette and nicotine smelly toys, but they're not the worst. The worst are those strange vomit or alcohol and chemically smelling toys. You have no idea what that stuff is, but it smells bad, and a lot of the time it's not water soluble!!! And it's completely soaked in the cockpit and small parts. Gum is the worst, cleaning it off toys is nasty and requires MUCH more effort than a wash bath or soaking. Anything that could easily remove gum will damage the vehicle itself depending on the plastic. You would be surprised how many times we tried hair spraying gum off and when chipping someone accidentally broke off a weakened fin or part. Fruit juices are particularly insidious. They give off this vague rotting smell when old and it ALSO seeps into small parts, the cockpit etc. And old stickers. MY GOD, old stickers are a real pain when someone doesn't keep them clean. The stickers themselves become nasty, but cleaning that combination of sticker glue and gunky now dirty glue paste behind the sticker. Oh and half the sticker is falling off because it's old. Ironically, removing pee, dung and various biological fluids is easy and only requires a water bath, still awful though. Industrial paint and Paint ball paint is pretty irritating on a toy to get because Industrial paint has non-eco friendly materials and without a way to identify the type of paint we have to always chuck it as we need to assume it's lead. Paint ball paint is SUPPOSED to come off, but they lie, it doesn't come off easy, it takes longer on plastics so it's a real pain. And then there's the occasional gunshot damage and various bullet damage from bb guns, various rifles etc. Which co-worker bought this and why? You can't clean that!! Oh well, it's not as bad as the time someone tried to get us to clean a toy with instant plastic foam covering it completely. Trying to cut it in half cut the whole toy in half, whoops. |

I use lighter fluid and a rag to remove sticker goo, whether old or new. I haven't had a problem with this method yet.
