So my boy bought a big Pirate ship and honestly for 40 bucks it is pretty cool, at least his geeky dad thinks so lol.
He loves the pirates and British soldier Playmobil stuff not but I am reading online and there seems to be a bunch of different versions, different country stuff, and just a lot of stuff. Anyone collect them? Will it break the bank if my son wants it all, even the older stuff? |

The line's been going since the mid-1970's. Even collecting a single theme would be expensive and time consuming, the pirate ships in particular were pricier items to begin with.

Concur, it is a great toy. Great quality for the money but the lines are extensive. Plus they retire sets making them more expensive and harder to find. Keep your eye on Toys R Us. They run specials on Playmobil pretty frequently and you can buy sets on clearance pretty cheap.

I wasn't a fan in the 70s/80s but I am now. I picked up the Great Asian Dragon Castle as a 3rd party Arashikage Temple (I cannot recommend this set enough along with the smaller tower and connecting portcullis-available only at their web page. Cool places for archer stations. in my Joe Universe the Arashikage Clan survived the Compound Z crisis in archaic style!) and I can say that they are a great toy company. I love the play value and quality of their sets. That set hooked me into all of their other Medieval (really Tudor era would be more accurate) line. But because of the other lines that I collect this line gets back burner status. I only normally pick items up at Tax return time or after a big week of over time.
I can tell you that sets no longer in production can be quite costly on the secondary market however but they seem to rehash a lot of their items to keep costs down. You may have to wait a generation for a reissue and there will always be some variation but their quality and play value is well worth the price tag. Items made for other countries can vary in price depending on the popularity of the item. I am very pleased with everything that I have purchased from them. And I really like how they have exclusives and extension parts on their home page. There is also a nice community of Playmobil figure customizers out there. I've had fun making Highlanders, Celtic Warriors and Druids out of their tattooed Native American and Pirate figures. I also appreciate that they actually have their own Celtic warriors, Druids, and Highlanders too. Don't over look their website. They have many exclusive items, accessories, and gear-like electric motors for the boats, available only through their webpage. Order direct from them if said item is the same else where and you'll regularly get 20% coupons and "pick of the month" discount emails. It will help if you plan on buying regularly. The home page also has little movies that your son might enjoy.

Is there a big difference in the Knights sets from the 80's and 90's vs today? I would not buying these but the Knights stuff looks VERY extensive but if I could keep the collection to "modern" items maybe I could swing that. |

The more recent one is short I know because I bought a couple of sets to use with the GI Joe figures one day (since I don't have room for it right now). The line includes the rocket launch station, space shuttle that attaches to the rocket, and a couple of more smaller sets. one of them is a bigger satellite capsule that replaces the one that comes by default with the rocket. I believe there is one more smaller set and that is is as far as I know. Not sure if they will expand the line but if I had to guess I would say no.

Personally I only got into Playmobil in the last 10 years because I don't care for the older sets. They were (IMHO) corny. That's why I only got the one set as a kid. I told "santa" that I didn't want anymore. After seeing some sets a few years back in the now defunct FAO Schwartz (damned Manhattan rent jack ups-the spot in the GM building is STILL vacant by the way. To hell with the &^%$#@#$#$$)I fell in love with the new sets and the amount of play value. I guess I had noticed something in them that I hadn't seen since the 80s. A toy company willing to make nice play sets that weren't flimsy junk (ahem Avenges Heli-carrier).

On a related note, Playmobil is awesome and my kids LOVE the sets. 3 story hospital, cruise ship, tree house, ice cream shop, space, and the list goes on and on and on. Lots of little accessories that are quite compatible to the Joe World. Enjoy your respective weekends and YO JOE!
